Crochet Granny Square Skirt
Materials Needed:
- Cotton yarn in five different colors. (Brand shown on screen in the video)
- 4 mm crochet hook
- Scissors
- Yarn needle
- Elastic band (for the waistband)
- Optional additional yarn for the waistband
Creating the Squares:
Start with a Magic Circle:
- Wrap the yarn over your three fingers, go under your pointer, over and under the middle finger creating an "X."
- Slide hook under the first strand, grab the twist, and pull through to make a knot.
- Chain 2 (counts as the first double crochet).
Complete the Circle:
- Make 11 more double crochets into the circle, totaling 12 double crochets.
- Pull the circle tight and slip stitch into the top chain of the chain 2.
- Chain 1, cut the yarn leaving a long loop, and pull through to secure.
Change Colors and Start New Rounds:
- Attach a new color with a slip knot; chain 2 on the hook.
- For the first square’s second round, do 3 double crochets into each existing stitch around the circle, with slip stitches to join and chain ones in between.
Create Corners to Form Squares:
- Start each new round in any of the corner gaps from the previous round.
- Perform "corner clusters" by doing 3 double crochets, chain 1, 3 double crochets in each corner.
- Fill the gaps between corners by doing 3 double crochets on each flat side.
Continue till Desired Rounds:
- Continue adding rounds until each square reaches the desired size (usually 5 rounds).
- Joining the Squares
Layout Squares:
- Lay out your completed squares in the pattern design you want for your skirt.
Make "Join As You Go" Attachments:
- Use the join-as-you-go method: start in a corner, join corners with a chain 1, and slip stitch into adjoining squares to connect as you work around.
- Ensure consistent tension and avoid puckering by not pulling the joints too tight.
Assembling the Skirt:
Sew Front and Back Pieces Together:
- Use single crochets or slip stitches to join the sides of the front and back pieces, leaving an opening if a slit is desired.
Add Elastic and Waistband:
- Sew elastic into the waist using a yarn needle to thread through the top stitches of the skirt.
- Create a waistband by doing rows of half double crochets around the waist area.
- Optionally, add a drawstring or extra yarn chain for additional closure and design.
Weave in Ends:
- Secure and trim all yarn ends.
Final Adjustments:
- Try on the skirt and make any necessary adjustments to fit or design.
Additional Details:
- Decorative elements like beads or additional color patterns can be added by incorporating them into individual squares or along the joins.
