Fibrefest Hexi Bag Crochet Free Pattern
Materials required:
- 5 x balls of Noro Silk Garden yarn (total is 250 grams, 500 mts) and 50g of plain yarn for joining & top edging.
- 3mm or 3.5mm hook depending on your tension, I used 3.5mm, which needs to be firm.
- Beads for decoration
Abbreviations:
- ch = chain
- dc = double crochet
- tr = treble
- ss = slip stitch
The pattern is written using English crochet terms.
Every round starts with a 3 chain which counts as the 1st treble & every round finishes with a slip stitch into the 3Ǥǖ chain of the first (pretend) treble.
This pattern is a bit like a granny square but has 6 corners & each hexie is 24cm wide at the widest part (point to point).
Sure, let's organize these instructions for clarity:
Making the Hexagons (Make 7 Hexies)
Base:
- Ch 4 & join with a ss, or do a magic loop.
Round 1:
- 3 ch (counted as 1st tr)
- 11 tr into ring, join with a ss into top of starting 3 ch (12 tr total)
Round 2:
- ss into space between trebles, 3 ch (counted as 1st tr)
- 1 tr into same space, then continue around the circle doing 2 tr into each space between trebles from previous round.
- Join with a ss into top of starting 3 ch (24 tr total)
For Round 3 (Creating Corners):
- Do 2 ss across the 2 tr into next main space to position for the corner.
- For each corner: (3 ch, 1 tr, 2 ch, 2 tr) into this first space.
- Between corners: 2 tr into next space, then repeat the corner sequence (2 tr, 2 ch, 2 tr) in next space.
- Repeat from * to * and finish the round, joining with a ss into the top of starting 3 ch.
Rounds 4 to 9 (Increasing for Size):
- Follow the pattern for Round 3, increasing the number of tr spaces between corners as follows:
- Round 4: Fill in 3 spaces between corners.
- Round 5: Fill in 4 spaces between corners.
- Continue this pattern, adding one more space between corners for each subsequent round until Round 9, where you fill in 7 spaces between corners.
Joining the Hexagons:
Preparations:
-
- Read all instructions first.
- Use contrast yarn to dc the hexagons together, outside edges first.
- Lay down the main center front hexagon, and surround it with 5 hexagons so they touch sides (none on the top edge).
Joining Sides:
-
- Double crochet around the 5 sides of the main hexagon, joining one hexagon on each side.
- Ensure to put the hook through both loops of the edge stitches of both hexagons (4 loops on hook).
Joining Back:
-
- Fold the side and bottom hexagons in half.
- Turn the bag over to see the placement for the center back hexagon.
- Use dc to join the back center hexagon to the other 5 in a circle.
- Join all other seams the same way with dc.
Securing the Bottom:
-
- Don't forget to join the very bottom of the bag at the corners.
Top Border:
- Starting on the high side, do 2 rows of DCs all around the top, adding 2 DC in the outside corners for a sharp square look.
- Finish with 1 extra row of ss all around.
Attaching Handles:
- Attach a PAIR of store-bought handles to the high edges as shown in the instructions’ photo.
This structure should help in making the pattern easier to follow!
