  • Susan Bates® Crochet Hook: 5.5mm [US I-9]
  • Yarn needle
  • GAUGE: 1 ripple = 6½" (16.5cm) from peak to peak; 6 rows = 3½" (9 cm). CHECK
  • YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.
  • RED HEART® With Love®, Art. E400 is available in solid color 7oz (198 g), 370 yd (338 m) and multicolor 5oz (141 g), 230 yd (211 m) skeins.

  • ch = chain(s);
  • dc = double crochet;
  • sc = single crochet;
  • st(s) = stitch(es);
  • * = repeat whatever follows the * as indicated.

Finished Size: The completed throw measures 45 inches in width and 56 inches in length (114.5 cm x 142 cm).

Pattern Notes

  1. Ripple Pattern: The throw features a ripple pattern made from a combination of 3-stitch "peaks" and 2-skipped-stitch "valleys", with 12 double crochets (dc) worked between them. The ripple's shape becomes more defined after several rows.
  2. Adjusting Size: For a longer throw, repeat Rows 2–25 as needed. Note that additional yarn will be required for an extended length.

Special Stitches

  • Bpdc (back post double crochet): Yarn over, insert hook from the back to the front and then to the back again around the post of the indicated stitch. Yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through 2 loops (2 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through the final 2 loops (1 loop on hook). Skip the stitch that is directly in front of the Bpdc.
  • Fpdc (front post double crochet): Yarn over, insert hook from the front to the back, and then to the front again around the post of the indicated stitch. Yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through 2 loops (2 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through the final 2 loops (1 loop on hook).

With color A, chain (ch) 191.

  • Row 1 (Wrong Side): Work 2 single crochets (sc) in 2nd ch from the hook, *sc in the next 12 ch, skip the next 2 ch, sc in the next 12 ch, 3 sc in the next ch; repeat from * 5 more times, sc in the next 12 ch, skip the next 2 ch, sc in the next 12 ch, 2 sc in the last ch, turn—190 stitches (sts).
  • Row 2: Ch 2 (does not count as a stitch here or throughout), 2 double crochets (dc) in the first st, *dc in the next 12 sts, skip the next 2 sts, dc in the next 12 sts, 3 dc in the next st; repeat from * 5 more times, dc in the next 12 sts, skip the next 2 sts, dc in the next 12 sts, 2 dc in the last st, turn.
  • Row 3: Ch 1, 2 sc in the first st, *sc in the next 12 sts, skip the next 2 sts, sc in the next 12 sts, 3 sc in the next st; repeat from * 5 more times, sc in the next 12 sts, skip the next 2 sts, sc in the next 12 sts, 2 sc in the last st, turn.
  • Rows 4–9: Repeat the last 2 rows 3 times.
  • Rows 10 and 11: Repeat Row 2.
  • Row 12: Ch 2, 2 dc in the first st, *bpdc around the next 12 sts, skip the next 2 sts, bpdc around the next 12 sts, 3 dc in the next st; repeat from * 5 more times, bpdc around the next 12 sts, skip the next 2 sts, bpdc around the next 12 sts, 2 dc in the last st, turn.
