Materials Needed:

  • Scrap yarns, size 4, 100% acrylic
  • Crochet hook size 5mm
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

Granny Square Pattern:

Starting the Granny Square:

  • Make a slip knot and insert the crochet hook.
  • Chain 4.
  • Join with a slip stitch to the first chain to form a ring.

Round 1:

  • Chain 4 (this counts as the first double crochet and chain 1).
  • Yarn over and make 3 double crochets into the ring.
  • Chain 2 (to create a corner).
  • Make 3 more double crochets into the ring (to form the second side).
  • Chain 2.
  • Repeat the 3 double crochets and 2 chains once more for the third side.
  • To complete the round, make 2 double crochets in the ring and join with a slip stitch to the third chain of the starting chain-4.

Round 2:

  • Choose a new color, attach it to any corner chain space.
  • Chain 4 (first double crochet and chain 1).
  • Work 3 double crochets in the same corner space.
  • In the next corner space, without chaining, make 3 double crochets.
  • In each corner space, work the pattern: [3 double crochets, chain 2, 3 double crochets].

For Round 3:

  • Attach a new color of yarn if desired.

  • For the side panels and straps, chain a length that matches the edge of your vest and create a simple single crochet or double crochet band to your desired width.
  • Sew the sides and straps onto the main body of the vest.
