Materials Needed:
- Medium weight (4) yarn in your favourite colors
- 5.5 mm crochet hook
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
Pattern:
Starting Your Cardigan:
Start with a Magic Ring.
- Insert the hook under the first thread, grab the second one and pull through.
- Yarn over (YO) the same one, and pull up a loop to form a ring.
- Chain 3.
Double Crochet (DC) Stitches:
- YO, insert the hook inside the ring, YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through two loops, YO again and pull through the remaining two loops.
Create the First Cluster:
- Chain 3 counts as one stitch.
- Make another 2 DC stitches inside the ring.
- Chain 1, then make another cluster of 3 DC stitches.
- Continue until you have 6 clusters.
Close Hexagon:
- Pull the magic ring tight.
- Slip stitch on the first stitch to close the hexagon.
Building The Cardigan:
- Chain 1.
- You can change colors here if you like.
- Attach the yarn between clusters from the previous round.
Expanding the Hexagon:
- Chain 3 for the first cluster and make 2 more DC.
- In each space, add a cluster of 3DC, chain 1, and another cluster of 3DC in the same space for corners.
- For sides, only do one cluster of 3DC in each space.
- Continue this pattern to grow your hexagon to 13 rows, or your desired size.
Forming the Cardigan:
- Fold the hexagon to identify the front and add rows on the arms and back only.
- Start at a shoulder corner, make clusters of 3DC in each space.
Connecting the Shoulders:
- Use the join-as-you-go method to connect the arms at the shoulder corner with 3DC, joining both pieces.
Sleeves and Bottom Edge:
- For sleeves, attach yarn between clusters and continue with clusters of 3DC in each space until you reach the desired length.
- Start decrease rows for the sleeve by combining two DC stitches together.
- Finish the sleeves with 5 rows of alternating front post and back post double crochet (fpdc and bpdc).
Final Touches:
- Work on the bottom edge by adding a row of DC in each stitch across, followed by 3 rows of bpdc and fpdc to match the sleeve ends.
- Repeat the same process for the front opening edges.
Assembly
Join both halves of the cardigan at the back and shoulders:
- Use the join as you go method as described previously.
Bottom Edge:
- Work on the bottom edge, adding a row of DC and 3 rows of bpdc/fpdc for a finished look.
Front Opening Edges:
- Similar to the bottom edge, work one row of DC followed by rows of bpdc/fpdc.
- Weave in all loose ends to finish.
