Designed with a comfortable fit, the pattern follows a men’s size guide but can be easily adjusted for any head size. Whether you’re making it as a thoughtful handmade gift or as a cozy accessory for yourself, this pattern offers versatility, warmth, and a modern look that works for everyone.

Materials

  • Yarn: Thick yarn, size 5
  • Hook: 8 mm crochet hook
  • Notes: Finished hat weighs about 126g

The Elastic Band

  • Make a slip knot and chain 12 stitches
  • Skip the first chain and work slip stitch into the back loop only of each chain across 11 stitches
  • Chain 1 and turn, continue slip stitching into back loop only for 11 stitches each row
  • Repeat until elastic band measures the desired size, 52 rows for men’s size
  • Join first and last rows with slip stitch to form a circle

The Hat Body

  • Chain 1 and begin working into the side of the elastic rows
  • Make 1 half double crochet in the first space, slip stitch in the next
  • Repeat alternating half double crochet and slip stitch around
  • Join with slip stitch at the end of the round
  • For round 2 chain 1, turn work, make 1 half double crochet into previous slip stitch, then 1 slip stitch into previous half double crochet
  • Repeat alternating stitches around and join with slip stitch
  • Continue this pattern until hat reaches about 18 to 19 cm in length

Closing the Crown

  • Chain 1 and begin decreases by skipping 1 stitch, slip stitching in the next, skipping 1 stitch, and half double crocheting in the next
  • Repeat this decrease pattern around and join with slip stitch
  • Work two more decrease rounds in the same way until the top nearly closes

Final Closure

  • Cut yarn leaving a long tail and fasten off
  • Thread yarn onto tapestry needle and weave through remaining stitches around the crown
  • Pull tail to cinch the top tightly closed
  • Sew any remaining gaps securely to finish the hat
