Crochet Lion 3d Granny Square Pattern For Beginners Step By Step

Get your crochet hooks out and let yourself be charmed by the adorable Crochet Lion 3D Granny Square! This cute crochet project takes the classic granny square to a whole new level of cuteness, with a playful lion design that pops right out.

Materials:

  • Yarn in various colors
  • Crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

Lion Head (Make 2 Circles):

Magic Ring - Round 1:

  • Create a double magic ring.
  • Chain 3 (counts as 1 double crochet).
  • Make 15 double crochets into the ring.
  • Join with a slip stitch to the third chain of the beginning chain-3 for a total of 16 stitches.

Round 2:

  • Chain 3 (counts as 1 double crochet).
  • Make a double crochet in the first stitch.
  • Increase (2 double crochets) in each stitch around.
  • Join with a slip stitch at the end of the round for a total of 32 double crochets.

Round 3:

  • Chain 3 (counts as 1 double crochet).
  • Make one double crochet in the same stitch.
  • Make one regular double crochet in the next stitch, then an increase (2 double crochets) in the following stitch. Repeat around.
  • A total of 48 stitches.
  • Cut the yarn, set it aside.

Bottom Part Circle

Magic Ring - Round 1:

  • Create a magic ring.
  • Chain 1.
  • Make 6 single crochets into the ring.
  • Join to the first single crochet.

Round 2:

  • Chain 3 (counts as 1 double crochet).
  • Make 2 double crochets in the same stitch.
  • Make 2 double crochets in the next stitch, then make 3 double crochets in the next stitch. Repeat around.
  • Join to the beginning chain-3.

For Round 3:

  • Chain 3.
  • Make 2 double crochets in each stitch around. Repeat.
  • A total of 32 stitches.

Joining the Pieces:

Round 5:

  • Holding both circles together, insert the hook into any back loop of a stitch from both pieces.
  • Work around with single crochets to join them together.
  • Chain 1.
  • Make 11 regular single crochets, then increase by 2 single crochets in the next stitch. Repeat around.
  • Work 9 regular single crochets at the end.

Forming the Square:

Round 6:

  • Chain 1.
  • Make 6 single crochets.
  • Chain 1, skip 2 stitches, work 2 double crochets into the next stitch, make 2 treble crochets in the next stitch, chain 1, then 2 more treble crochets in the same stitch for the corner.
  • Continue the pattern on each side until the end of the round.

Round 7:

  • Chain 3 (counts as 1 double crochet).
  • Skip 2 stitches, make 3 double crochets in the next stitch. Repeat this pattern along each side.
  • Chain 3 for the corner.
  • Skip 1 stitch (the chain-1 space), continue with 3 double crochets, skip 2 stitches along the next side. Repeat around.

For Round 8:

  • Single crochet around the entire square.
  • In each corner chain space, work 5 single crochets.
  • Join to the first single crochet at the end of the round.

Lion's Mane and Face Details:

  • Chain 3, work 7 double crochets into the same stitch.
  • Skip 2 stitches and make a single crochet in the next.
  • Repeat this pattern around for the mane.
  • For the nose, with black yarn create a small piece with 3 double crochets, turn, work some single crochets, and finish.
  • Attach white yarn for additional facial features.
  • Make ears by attaching them with a chain-2 arch and double crochet stitches.

Finishing:

  • Fasten off all yarn ends, weave in the loose ends, and shape your granny square.
  • Attach any additional features like eyes or mouth with your yarn needle.
