Granny Square Pattern:
For the Smaller Ornament (3 rounds):
- Start with a magic ring, or if using the chain method: chain 4 and slip stitch to the first chain to make a ring.
- Chain 2 (this will not count as a stitch).
- In the ring, make 3 double crochets (DC), chain 1.
- Repeat step 3 three more times for a total of 4 sets (clusters) of 3 DCs separated by chain 1 spaces.
- Slip stitch to the top of the first DC to close the round.
- Slip stitch over into the first chain 1 space.
- Chain 2.
- In the same space, make 3 DC, chain 1, and 3 DC (this forms your first corner).
- Jump directly to the next chain 1 space with no chain in between, and repeat 3 DC, chain 1, and 3 DC in the same space.
- Continue doing the 3 DC, chain 1, and 3 DC in the remaining two corners.
Slip stitch to the top of the first DC to close the round.
For the Larger Ornament (4 rounds):
- Repeat rounds 2-11, then add an additional round by slip-stitching into the next chain space, chaining 2, and following the pattern of 3 DC, chain 1, 3 DC in the corner spaces, and placing 3 DC in the spaces between corners (without chaining in between).
Assembly:
- Make 2 granny squares per Christmas ornament.
- Place the squares wrong sides together, lining up the stitches.
- Join yarn in the corner and chain 1.
- Single crochet around three sides of the square, chaining 1 at each corner.
- Place the Christmas ornament between the two granny squares.
- Continue to single crochet around the remaining side, but before fully sealing, insert the Christmas ornament.
- Complete the single crochet stitches around, then slip stitch to close.
- Weave in the ends.
(Optional): Creating a Hanging Loop
- If desired, create a hanging loop with a chain stitch of an appropriate length and attach it securely to the top of the ornament.
Finishing:
- Trim and weave in all loose ends for a neat finish.
