Pattern Instructions:

In Round 1 (Flower Core):

  • Start with green yarn. Make a magic ring.
  • Chain 1.
  • Do 6 single crochets into the ring. Chain 3 between each single crochet.
  • Carefully tighten the magic ring by pulling the yarn tail.
  • Join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet.

Round 2 (Flower Petals):

  • Chain 2 (counts as a half double crochet).
  • Work 3 half double crochets into each single crochet from the previous round (18 stitches total).
  • Overlay the yarn tail to cinch up the center.
  • Join with a slip stitch to the chain 2.

Round 3 (Building the Flower):

  • Change to white yarn.
  • Chain 2 (counts as a double crochet), and add another double crochet in the same stitch.
  • Perform a front post double crochet on the next stitch.
  • Work two double crochet clusters (one double crochet in each of the next two stitches).
  • Continue this pattern around (two double crochets, front post double crochet), ending with two double crochets in the last stitch.

  • Join with a slip stitch.

For Round 4 (Expanding the Flower):

  • Chain 3 (counts as a double crochet).
  • Work another double crochet in the same stitch.
  • Continue with a two double crochet cluster in the next 4 stitches.
  • Alternate clusters with a front post double crochet around.
  • Join with a slip stitch.

Round 5 (Petals Definition):

  • Chain 3 (counts as a double crochet), and add three more double crochet clusters in the following three stitches.
  • Execute a front post single crochet.
  • Continue with eight clusters of two double crochets.
  • Alternate with a front post single crochet and repeat the pattern.
  • Join with a slip stitch.

Round 6 (Final Round for Flower):

  • Work single crochets all around (85 stitches total).
  • Join with a slip stitch and fasten off.

Transforming the Flower into a Granny Square:

Building the Square Frame:

  • Find and use the empty stitches from earlier rounds. Insert hook and attach new yarn with a slip stitch.
  • Chain 1, single crochet in the same stitch.
  • Chain 4, single crochet into the next empty stitch. Repeat around.
  • Join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet.

Filling the Square Frame:

  • Chain 3 in any chain space, then work two double crochets in the same space.
  • Chain 1, then three double crochets in the next chain space.
  • In the corners, work three double crochets, chain three, and three more double crochets.
  • Continue the pattern around for each side.
  • Complete the round with a slip stitch.
