Crochet Christmas Snowman & Reindeer Applique Tutorial

Crochet Christmas Snowman & Reindeer Applique

Materials:

  • Medium-weight yarn in white, black, and orange
  • 3.75 mm crochet hook
  • Yarn needle
  • 6 mm black safety eyes
  • 12 inches of black embroidery thread

Instructions:

Make the body:

Chain 1 and make a magic circle.

Round 1:

  • Work 8 half double crochet stitches inside the circle. Close the circle by pulling the short tail end tight and joining to the top of the first half double crochet with a slip stitch. Chain 1.

Round 2:

  • Work 2 half double crochets into each stitch around. Join to the top of the first half double crochet with a slip stitch and chain 1. (16 stitches)

For Round 3:

  • Work 1 half double crochet into the first stitch, then 2 half double crochets into the next stitch. Repeat around. Join to the top of the first half double crochet with a slip stitch and cut off the yarn. Weave in all ends. (24 stitches)

Make the hat:

Chain 4. Starting in the second chain from the hook, work 3 single crochets across. Chain 1 and turn.

Row 2:

  • Single crochet into each stitch across. Chain 1 and turn.

For Row 3:

  • Single crochet in the first 3 stitches, then chain 4. Single crochet in the second chain from the hook, then single crochet in the next 2 chains.

Row 4:

  • Work 1 single crochet into the edge of each of the previous 3 rows (creating the brim). Chain 4, single crochet in the second chain from the hook, single crochet in the next chain, then single crochet 2 together in the next 2 chains and the next stitch down (working up the back of the hat).

For Row 5:

  • Single crochet in the next stitch, then single crochet 2 together in the next stitch and the brim. Repeat around the bottom edge of the hat.
  • Join to the first single crochet with a slip stitch, cut off the yarn, and weave in the ends. Leave a long tail for sewing.

Make the nose:

Chain 4. Starting in the second chain from the hook, work 1 half double crochet, 1 single crochet, and 1 slip stitch into the last chain. Cut off the yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Assemble the snowman:

  • Sew the hat onto the top of the snowman's head.
  • Sew the nose onto the center of the snowman's face.
  • Place the safety eyes between the hat and the nose, about 4 stitches apart.
  • Embroider a smile using black embroidery thread, working through rounds 2 and 3.

Crochet Reindeer Applique:

  • Medium-weight yarn in medium brown, dark brown, light brown, and red
  • 3.75 mm crochet hook
  • Yarn needle

Instructions:

Make the head:

  • Chain 1 and make a magic circle.

Round 1:

  • Work 8 half double crochet stitches inside the circle. Close the circle and join to the top of the first half double crochet with a slip stitch. Chain 1. (8 stitches)

Round 2:

  • Work 2 half double crochets into each stitch around. Join to the top of the first half double crochet with a slip stitch and chain 1. (16 stitches)

For Round 3:

Work 1 single crochet into the first stitch, then 2 single crochets into the next stitch. Repeat around. Join to the top of the first single crochet with a slip stitch and chain 2. (24 stitches)

Make the ears:

  • Round 4: Double crochet into the first stitch, chain 2, double crochet again into the same stitch, chain 2, slip stitch into the next stitch, then slip stitch into the next 6 stitches. Repeat for the other ear. Cut off the yarn and weave in the ends.

Add the antlers:

  • Attach dark brown yarn to the first slip stitch beside the right ear. Chain 5, single crochet in the second chain from the hook, slip stitch into the next chain, chain 3, single crochet in the second chain from the hook, slip stitch into the next chain, single crochet into the last 2 chains of the original chain 5, slip stitch into the next 3 stitches on the head. Repeat for the other antler. Cut off the yarn and weave in the ends.

Make the snout:

Chain 1 and make a magic circle. Work 10 half double crochets inside the circle. Close the circle and join to the top of the first half double crochet with a slip stitch. Cut off the yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Assemble the reindeer:

  • Sew the snout onto the center of the reindeer's face.
  • Place the eyes above the snout, about 4 stitches apart.
  • Embroider the nose with red yarn in a triangular shape.
