Crochet Candy Cane Gingerbread Man Ornament

Materials:

  • Lion Brand Heartland yarn in the color of your choice (two skeins per ornament)
  • Two candy canes per ornament
  • Beads or buttons for the eyes and mouth
  • Yarn needle
  • 4.5 mm crochet hook
  • Ribbon or thread for hanging

Abbreviations:

  • CH: Chain
  • SC: Single crochet
  • HDC: Half double crochet
  • SL ST: Slip stitch

Instructions:

Body:

  • Make a cinch circle with your yarn and hook. CH 1 and work 8 SC into the circle.
  • Cinch up the circle tightly and join the row with a SL ST into the first SC.

Row 2:

  • Increase to 16 SC by working 2 SC in each SC around.

Row 3:

  • Increase to 24 SC by working 2 SC in the first SC and 1 SC in each of the next 2 SC. Repeat around.

For Row 4:

  • Even out the circle by working 1 SC in each of the next 3 SC. SL ST into the next SC to join.

Row 5:

CH 1, turn. HDC in the same ST as the SL ST, SC in the next 2 SC, HDC in the next SC. Repeat around.

Row 6:

  • CH 1, turn. Increase to 8 SC by working 2 HDC in the first SC, HDC in the next 4 SC, 2 HDC in the last SC.

Row 7:

  • CH 1, turn. Increase to 10 SC by working 2 HDC in the first SC, HDC in the next 6 SC, 2 HDC in the last SC.

Rows 8-10:

  • CH 1, turn. Work 1 HDC in each SC around.

Head:

Row 1:

  • With the same color yarn, make a cinch circle with 8 SC. Join with a SL ST.

Row 2:

  • Increase to 16 SC.

For Row 3:

  • Increase to 24 SC.

Row 4:

  • Even out the circle with 3 SC, SL ST to join.

Row 5:

  • CH 1, turn. HDC in the same ST, SC in the next 2 SC, HDC in the next SC. Repeat around.

For Row 6:

  • CH 1, turn. Increase to 8 SC.

Row 7:

  • CH 1, turn. Increase to 10 SC.

Rows 8-10:

  • CH 1, turn. Work 1 HDC in each SC around.

Finishing:

  • Attach the head to the body by sewing the back edges together with a yarn needle and thread. Leave a small opening for stuffing.
  • Stuff the gingerbread man with fiberfill or other stuffing material.
  • Sew the opening closed.
  • Embroider or sew on buttons for the eyes and mouth.
  • Attach the candy canes to the shoulders of the gingerbread man.
  • Attach a ribbon or thread to the top of the head for hanging.
