Crochet 2-round Snowflake & Tea Coaster
Materials Needed:
- Scrap weight yarn around 3 weight (but feel free to experiment with different weights)
- Crochet hook appropriate for your yarn
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle or a smaller hook for weaving ends
Pattern for the Snowflake:
Round 1:
- Start by making a slip knot.
- Chain 5, then join the first and last chain with a slip stitch to form a ring.
Making the First Petal:
- Chain 4 (This counts as the first triple crochet).
- Wrap yarn around the hook twice, insert your hook for a triple crochet, but keep the last loop of each triple crochet on the hook.
- Make 2 more triple crochets into the ring, keeping the last loop of each stitch on the hook (you will have 4 loops on your hook).
- Yarn over and draw through all 4 loops on the hook (this completes a cluster of 3 triple crochets together).
- Chain 3. This forms the first petal.
Continuing Round 1:
- In the same way, create 7 more petals, each separated by a chain of 3.
- After the eighth petal, chain 3 and join with a slip stitch to the top of the starting chain 4.
Round 2 (Last Round):
- Chain 4.
- In the same space, make 4 triple crochets together as explained in the first petal step but leave the loops on the hook until you yarn over and pull through all the loops.
- Chain 3, then create a picot by chaining 5 and slip stitching in the same space.
- Chain 3, create another cluster of 4 triple crochets in the next chain space from round 1, and follow the pattern as previously described.
- Continue around the snowflake, repeating the steps for creating the petals with picots in between, until you have a total of 8 points on your snowflake.
- Finish the round by slip stitching to the first chain 4 space. Cut your yarn and weave in the ends for a neat finish.
Finishing Touches:
- If desired, you can make a hanging loop using the remaining thread.
- Weave in the ends with a smaller hook or a tapestry needle.
- You may choose to block your snowflake or stiffen it with starch, particularly if made with lightweight yarn, to maintain its shape.
