Crochet Mushroom Boi

Materials Needed:

  • DK weight yarn in white or cream
  • 3.5 mm crochet hook
  • Stitch marker (scrap yarn recommended)
  • Optional safety eyes (5 mm, or size preferred)
  • Red yarn (worsted or DK as preferred)
  • Stuffing material
  • Tapestry needle
  • Black yarn for the mouth
  • Pins (for positioning the arms and spots)

Pattern Instructions:

Magic Loop & Body:

  • Magic loop with 6 single crochet (sc) stitches.
  • Single crochet 6 (1 round plain).
  • Single crochet 1, increase (inc), repeat 3 times (9 sc total).
  • Single crochet 2, inc, repeat 3 times (12 sc total).
  • Single crochet around for 3 rounds.

On the first leg, break the yarn; on the second leg, do not break the yarn.

  • Chain 6 to join legs, ensuring the chains are loosely made.
  • Increase round: Single crochet 5, inc, repeat, including chain stitches.
  • Work on the back of the chain and other leg as step 7.
  • Single crochet around 12 times for 42 stitches.
  • Decrease round: Single crochet 5, decrease (dec), repeat 6 times (36 stitches).
  • Single crochet around for another 6 rounds.

Stuff & Shape:

Begin stuffing the body and legs.

  • If there's a gap where the legs connect, use the yarn end with a needle to stitch it closed.

Decrease for Shape:

Decrease round:

  • Single crochet 4, dec, repeat 6 times (30 stitches).
  • Single crochet around once.

Final decrease round:

  • Single crochet 3, dec, repeat 6 times (24 stitches).

Mushroom Gills:

  • Chain 3, double crochet around the front posts, increasing in each post by crocheting 2 (48 double crochet front post stitches).
  • Slip stitch into the top of the first double crochet, chain 3, and then double crochet front post around once more for 2 rounds.

Mushroom Cap:

  • Change to red yarn, single crochet in the back loops only around.
  • Increase round with red yarn: Single crochet 7, inc, repeat 6 times (54 stitches).
  • Single crochet 8, inc, repeat for 60 stitches.
  • Single crochet around for 4 rounds.

  • Decrease to close to match the previous decrease steps until you have 6 stitches left; close with a tapestry needle.

Arms (Make 2):

  • Magic loop with 6 single crochet stitches.
  • Single crochet 6 (1 round plain).
  • Increase rounds similar to the legs, with 5 rounds of plain single crochet for the arms, then double crochet 4 and one single crochet for a slight angle.

Assembly:

  • Sew the arms and attach safety eyes, if using.
  • Stuff the mushroom cap lightly or more, based on desired flatness. Ensure safety eyes are attached before closing the cap if you choose to use them.

Mushroom Spots:

  • With white worsted weight yarn, create a magic loop with 6 single crochet stitches (make 7 spots or as desired).
  • Sew them onto the cap at different places using a tapestry needle.

Smile:

  • Use a strand of black yarn to create a smile between the eyes and secure it with black thread.

Final Tou'ches:

  • Sew on all pieces, make any final adjustments for aesthetics, and secure all loose ends inside the stuffing.
