Instructions:

Foundation:

Chain 4, slip stitch to the first chain to form a ring.

Row 1:

Chain 3 (counts as first double crochet here and throughout), work 3 double crochets into the ring, chain 2, work 4 double crochets into the ring. Turn. (8 dc total)

Row 2:

Chain 4 (counts as double crochet and chain 1), skip the first double crochet, double crochet in the next 3 double crochets, chain 1, [double crochet, chain 2, double crochet] in the chain-2 space, chain 1, double crochet in the next 3 double crochets, double crochet in the top of the turning chain. Turn. (12 dc total)

For Row 3:

Chain 3, double crochet in the next double crochet, *[chain 1, skip next double crochet, double crochet in next double crochet] 3 times, chain 1, [double crochet, chain 2, double crochet] in the chain-2 space, chain 1, double crochet in the next double crochet, double crochet in the top of the turning chain. Turn. (16 dc total)

Repeat Row 3:

Continue repeating Row 3, increasing the number of stitches by 4 every row until your shawl reaches the desired size. Each row should have increases at each end and on either side of the center double crochet in the chain-2 space.

Decrease Rows:

Once your shawl is at the desired size, you can start decreasing: Follow the same pattern as Row 3 but decrease the number of stitches at each end of the row.

Border:

To add a border, you can work a row of single crochet around the entire shawl, making sure to place 3 single crochets in each corner to maintain the shape.
