Pattern Instructions
Starting the base:
Magic Ring:
- Make a magic ring.
- Chain 3 (counts as the first double crochet).
Round 1:
- Make 11 double crochet (DC) stitches into the magic ring.
- To complete each DC, yarn over (YO), insert the hook into the ring, YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through two loops, YO and pull through the remaining two loops.
- You should have a total of 12 stitches (including the chain 3).
- Pull the magic ring closed tightly.
- Join with a slip stitch (SC) to the top of the initial chain 3.
Building the square:
Row 2:
- Chain 3 (counts as the first DC).
- Work 3 more DCs into the next stitches.
- Corner: Chain 3, then work 4 DC starting from the last DC stitch.
- Repeat the above step for each side of the square to form a total of 4 corners.
- Join with a slip stitch to the chain 3 at the beginning of the row.
Row 3 and beyond:
- Chain 3 to start each new row.
- Work a DC in every stitch until you reach a corner space.
- In each corner space, make 1 DC, chain 3, and 1 DC.
- Continue this pattern until the square is of desired size, generally repeating the increase in stitches for each side as the square expands.
Adding texture with puff stitches:
Puff Stitches:
- Chain 3.
Puff Stitch:
- YO, insert the hook into the stitch, YO and pull up a loop; repeat 4 more times in the same stitch, until you have 9 loops on your hook. YO and pull through all loops on the hook, then chain 1.
Placement:
- Continue with one puff stitch in every two stitches, chaining 1 between each puff stitch.
- In corners, work 1 DC, chain 3, and 1 DC.
Final touches:
Finishing Rows:
- Continue the pattern or add more rows of DC as needed to complete the design.
- If desired, adjust with rows of single crochet for a firmer edge.
Strap and Finishing:
- Chain to desired strap length, looping extra yarn around the hook for strength.
- Attach the strap to corners with SC.
- Weave in all loose ends.
- Optionally, add a tassel for decorative purposes.
