Materials:

  • Embroidery hoop
  • Darning needle
  • Scissors
  • 5 mm hook
  • 3.25 mm hook
  • Green yarn
  • Black yarn
  • String lights

Instructions:

Prepare the Embroidery Hoop:

  • Remove the inner ring of the embroidery hoop.
  • Place the outer ring on a flat surface.

Create the Base:

  • Place the green yarn in the center of the embroidery hoop.
  • Chain 1.
  • Single crochet around the entire hoop (48 stitches total).
  • Slip stitch to the first single crochet to join.

Round 1:

  • Chain 2 (does not count as a stitch).
  • Double crochet in the same stitch.
  • Double crochet in the next stitch.
  • 2 double crochets in the next stitch.
  • Repeat this pattern (1 double crochet, 1 double crochet, 2 double crochets) around.
  • Slip stitch to the first double crochet to join.

  • Chain 2.
  • Turn the work over.
  • 2 double crochets together in the back loops of the stitches all the way around.
  • Slip stitch to the first 2 double crochets together to join.

Repeat Rounds:

  • Chain 2.
  • 2 double crochets in each stitch all the way around.
  • Slip stitch to the first double crochet to join.
  • Chain 2.
  • 2 double crochets together in the back loops of the stitches all the way around.
  • Slip stitch to the first 2 double crochets together to join.
  • Repeat these two rounds 11 times.

Finishing the Top:

  • Chain 1.
  • Single crochet back post in each stitch around.
  • Slip stitch to the first single crochet to join.
  • Chain 2.
  • 2 double crochets together in the back loops of the stitches all the way around.
  • Slip stitch to the first 2 double crochets together to join.

Create the Inner Basket:

  • Make a magic circle.
  • Single crochet 6 stitches into the magic circle.
  • Slip stitch to the first single crochet to join.
  • Chain 1.
  • 2 single crochets in each stitch around (12 stitches total).
  • Slip stitch to the first single crochet to join.
  • Chain 1.
  • Single crochet in each stitch around.
  • Repeat the last step 5 times.
  • Slip stitch to the first single crochet to join.

Create the Basket Supports:

  • Chain 14.
  • Single crochet back down the chain (13 stitches).
  • Chain 1.
  • Single crochet in the next stitch.
  • 6 single crochets in the next stitch.
  • Chain 14.
  • Single crochet back down the chain (13 stitches).
  • Chain 1.
  • Single crochet in the next stitch.
  • 6 single crochets in the next stitch.
  • Chain 14.
  • Single crochet back down the chain (13 stitches).
  • Chain 1.
  • Single crochet in the next stitch.
  • 6 single crochets in the next stitch.
  • Slip stitch to the beginning of the first chain to join.

Attach the Basket:

  • Place the basket inside the lantern.
  • Use a long piece of green yarn and a darning needle to sew the basket supports to the inside of the lantern.

Create the Hair:

  • With black yarn and a 3.25 mm hook, single crochet around the top edge of the lantern.
  • Chain 5.
  • Single crochet in the second chain from the hook.
  • Half double crochet in the next chain.
  • Double crochet in the next chain.
  • Treble crochet in the next chain.
  • Skip 4 stitches.
  • Single crochet in the next stitch.
  • Repeat this pattern around the entire lantern.

Create the Eyes:

  • Make two small black squares using the same method as the basket.
  • Sew the eyes onto the lantern.

Creating the Nose and Mouth:

  • Use black yarn to embroider a small triangle for the nose and a curved line for the mouth.

Add the Lights:

  • Place the string lights inside the basket.
  • Hang and Enjoy!
