This cozy crochet beanie uses simple stitches and a repeating BLO ribbed texture, making it a great choice for beginners who want a stylish unisex accessory. The pattern creates a stretchy fabric with a comfortable fit, and its two-row repeat makes it fast to memorize.

Crochet Unisex Hat

Crochet BLO Hat Simple Unisex Free Easy Pattern

You can easily customize the length or use different yarn colors for a unique look. Once the flat panel is complete, the hat is seamed and cinched for an easy finish, making it a perfect project for gifting or everyday wear.

Materials

  • Size 4 medium yarn
  • 5.5 mm hook
  • Stitch markers
  • Scissors
  • Darning needle

Starting the Project

  • Make a slip knot and chain 46.
  • Work into the back bump of the foundation chain.
  • Skip the first chain and begin in the second chain’s back bump.

Row 1

  • Work 10 SC for the brim.
  • Work 5 SS.
  • Work 5 HDC.
  • Repeat the sequence of 5 SS and 5 HDC to the end.
  • End with 5 SS.
  • Chain 1 and turn.

Textured Body Pattern

  • All stitches are worked in BLO.
  • Follow a two row repeat alternating stitch placement.

Row Set A

  • Row 2: 5 SS, then repeat 5 HDC and 5 SS across, ending with 10 SC.
  • Row 3: 10 SC, then repeat 5 SS and 5 HDC, ending with 5 SS.

Row Set B

  • Row 4: 5 SS, then repeat 5 HDC and 5 SS across, ending with 10 SC.
  • Row 5: 10 SC, then repeat 5 SS and 5 HDC, ending with 5 HDC.

Repeat

  • Repeat Row Sets A and B until the hat wraps around your head without stretching.
  • End on a row with HDC next to the SC brim (same format as Row 5).

Seaming and Finishing

  • Fold the panel with short edges together, wrong side facing.
  • Slip stitch seam through both loops of one edge and BLO of the other edge.

  • Chain 1 to secure and cut a long tail.
  • Weave the tail around the top opening and pull tight to cinch closed.
  • Sew closed fully, weave in ends, and turn the hat right-side out.
