Materials:
- 4mm crochet hook
- Acrylic yarn (Hobby Lobby yarn recommended)
- Darning needle
- Stitch marker (optional)
Envelope Pattern:
Start the Envelope:
- Chain 31.
- Single crochet in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across for a total of 30 single crochets.
- Chain one and turn your work.
Continue the Body:
- Single crochet in each stitch across (30 single crochets).
- Chain one and turn your work.
- Repeat the previous step for a total of 32 rows.
Edging:
- At the end of the 32nd row, do not cut your yarn. Chain one and turn.
- Single crochet in each stitch across but do not crochet into the last stitch.
- In the last stitch, make three single crochets (this creates a corner).
- Rotate your work to put one single crochet into the end of each row on the side, and three single crochets in each of the other three corners.
- Slip stitch to the first stitch of the edging and leave a long tail for sewing.
Heart Pattern:
Create Center Ring:
- Chain 3, slip stitch to the first chain to form a ring. Place a stitch marker in the center to mark your starting point.
First Round of Heart:
- Chain 1 and make one single crochet into the ring.
- Make one double crochet into the ring (consider marking this first single crochet for later reference).
- Make three treble crochets into the ring.
- Make four double crochets into the ring.
- Make one treble crochet (this is the bottom tip of the heart).
- Repeat the process in reverse order on the other side to create the second half of the heart.
- End with a single crochet in the same space as the first single crochet.
- Slip stitch to complete the round.
Second Round of Heart:
- Start in your first single crochet (where your stitch marker is). Make a single crochet two together (sc2tog) to reduce the stitches.
- In the same space, make two half double crochets.
- Place a stitch marker in the first stitch.
- Make three double crochets in each of the next two stitches.
- Continue following the pattern around the heart, creating the second round and finishing with the stitch markers.
- Slip stitch to the first stitch to finish.
Assembling the Envelope:
- Fold the edges of your crocheted rectangle (the envelope) towards the center.
- Use the darning needle and the tail from the edging to sew the sides together, using a whip stitch or preferred seaming technique. Start from the stitch closest to you and sew to the stitch farthest away, then the next closest stitch to the farthest on the opposite side. Go back in the opposite direction to reinforce your stitches.
- Attach the larger heart on the outside of the envelope and the smaller one inside, using a darning needle and yarn.
- Optionally, you can do a running stitch along the edges of the envelope for decorative purposes.
