Materials Needed:

  • Orange yarn
  • Green pipe cleaners (for the stem)
  • Black felt (for the face, optional)
  • Hot glue gun
  • Tea lights
  • Headbands (preferably wider for wrapping)
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors
  • Crochet hook size 8

Crochet Pattern:

Starting the Pumpkin:

Make a Magic Ring.

  • Chain 1.
  • Make 10 half-double crochets (HDC) into the magic ring.
  • Slip stitch to join the round.

Increase Round:

  • Chain 1 (this counts as the first HDC).
  • Make 2 HDCs in each stitch around.
  • You should have 20 HDCs at the end of this round.
  • Slip stitch to join the round.

Second Increase Round:

  • Chain 1.
  • 1 HDC in the same stitch, 1 HDC in the next two stitches.
  • 2 HDCs in the next stitch, 1 HDC in the next two stitches.
  • Repeat from to around.
  • You should have 26 HDCs by the end of this round.
  • Slip stitch to join the round.

Decrease Round:

  • Chain 1.
  • Perform a half-double crochet decrease over the next two stitches.
  • 1 HDC in the next two stitches, then a half-double crochet decrease.
  • Repeat from to around.
  • This will reduce your stitches down (you'll end up with 19 stitches if following the pattern described).

Final Decrease to Shape the Pumpkin:

  • Continue with the process of one HDC and then a decrease (half-double crochet decrease) following the pattern until the circumference is small enough to fit snugly over the tea light.
  • Once the desired size is achieved, finish off by pulling a loop through and fastening off to secure the work.

Creating and Attaching the Stem:

  • Cut a piece of green pipe cleaner for the stem. Twist it at the base to secure and create a stem shape.
  • Thread a small piece of yarn through the top of the pumpkin crochet piece. Tie it around the base of the pipe cleaner stem to attach it to the pumpkin.

Adding the Face:

  • Cut out shapes for the eyes and mouth from black felt.
  • Use hot glue to attach the felt features to the crochet pumpkin, forming a jack-o'-lantern face (this step is optional).

Assembling the Lamp/Light:

  • Activate the tea light by removing the plastic tab and ensuring it works.
  • Glue the crochet pumpkin over the tea light. Make sure not to cover the switch so you can easily turn it on or off.
  • Attach the decorated tea light to the headband, positioning it as desired. Use hot glue to secure the light in place.
