Materials Needed:

  • Sport weight yarn or a number 4 worsted weight yarn for a thicker shawl.
  • 5.5mm crochet hook (US size I/9).
  • Optionally, a larger hook for a looser drape if using thicker yarn.

Foundation:

Start:

  • Chain 61 stitches.

Pattern:

Row 1:

  • Skip the first 3 chains.
  • In the 4th chain from the hook, work a single crochet.
  • Chain 1, skip 1 chain, single crochet in the next chain. Repeat from to across the row.
  • You should end with 38 single crochets by the end of this row.

Row 2 and Beyond:

  • Chain 4 and turn your work.
  • Single crochet in the first chain (skipping 3 chains).
  • Continue by working a single crochet and a chain one, skipping the single crochets from the previous row, but working into the chain spaces.
  • At the midpoint (or wherever desired based on the shawl's size and fit), increase by working a single crochet, chain 2, and single crochet all in the same chain space.

  • Continue to repeat the established pattern, increasing at the midpoint in each row to gradually expand the shawl.
  • After achieving the desired length and width, you can finalize the main body of the shawl.
