Crochet Popcorn Bag
Materials Needed:
- 615 grams of nautical thread and polypropylene 3mm (ivory color suggested)
- Crochet hook size 4.5 mm
- Scissors
- Lighter
- Tape measure
- 18mm button
- Two 3cm articulated rings
Base of the Bag:
Make an initial knot and chain 36 (increase initial chains for a bigger bag, must be a multiple of four).
- Measure the chain; it should be 26 centimeters.
- Work on the back loops of the chain and make 35 single crochets to the end.
- Your piece after row 1 should measure 25 centimeters.
- Chain one, turn the piece, and continue with single crochets for a total of 4 rows before the popcorn stitch.
Popcorn Stitch Pattern:
- To start the pattern, make a single crochet and then follow the popcorn stitch process.
- To form the popcorn stitch:
- Insert the needle into the next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through two loops (you'll repeat these steps, pulling loops through the base stitch until you have 6 loops in total on the needle).
- Yarn over and pull through all 6 loops on the needle to finish the popcorn stitch.
- Separate each popcorn stitch with three single crochets.
- End the row with a single crochet as you started.
Building the Pattern:
- Next row, only work in single crochets (35 stitches).
- Alternate starting each popcorn stitch row with one single crochet and then three single crochets in the next.
- Continue this pattern, with a single crochet row in between, until there are 22 rows in total or 6 popcorn stitches vertically on the side of the piece.
Finishing the Body:
- After the popcorn rows, work 2 more rows with single crochets.
- Circle the entire piece with single crochets for 6 rows to form the sides of the bag.
Assembling and Finishing:
- Make the same number of stitches on the other piece so they match when sewing together.
- Seam the pieces together using slip stitches on the inside.
- After seaming, make 2 more rows of single crochets along the edge.
- Attach the handle using carabiner rings folded into the sides of the bag.
- Sew on the button with nylon thread for closure.
Making the Handle:
- Create an initial knot and chain 6.
- Circle back working slip stitches in a spiral until the handle is the desired length (suggested 51cm).
- Close the opening of the handle with slip stitches for a neat look.
- Sew the handle onto the bag using the carabiner rings.
Final Touches:
- Hide and burn the ends of the yarn.
- Consider adding a lining to the bag for a more finished look.
