Crochet Balaclava With Cat Ears
Materials Needed:
- Yarn
- Crochet hook
- Stitch markers
- Yarn needle
Cat Ear Pattern:
Start with a slip knot and chain two.
- In the first chain, insert your hook into the back bump and make a half double crochet. Place a stitch marker in the top two loops of the half double crochet. This is Row 1 and you should have one stitch.
- Chain one and turn your work to begin Row 2. Make three half double crochets in the marked stitch. Mark the first stitch of Row 2 and remove the first stitch marker.
Continue by chaining one and turning your work for Row 3. Make two half double crochets in the first stitch, one half double crochet in the next, and two half double crochets in the last stitch. Mark the first stitch, and you will have five stitches in total.
- For each subsequent row, start with a chain one and turn. In the first and last stitches, make two half double crochets each, and in the stitches between, make one half double crochet each. Continue this pattern until you have the desired size of the ear, which should be a triangle shape.
- Work single crochets along the edged side of the ear. For every two rows of half double crochets, make three single crochets.
- Leave a long yarn tail for sewing the ear onto the balaclava.
Balaclava Body:
Measure the distance needed for your balaclava, then make a slip knot and chain the necessary length (the tutorial mentions a beginning chain 2 inches shorter than the measured distance).
- For the first row, you will work double crochets starting from the second chain from the hook, using either stacking single crochets for the first stitch or the equivalent of a chain 3.
- At the end of the first row, skip the increase part and start the next row.
The pattern for increasing at the beginning of every second row is as follows:
- For the first two rows, work three double crochets, and for rows three and four and onwards, work two double crochets into the first stitch.
- Continue the subsequent rows by making one double crochet in each back loop across. The increase will stop from row seven, where you only make one double crochet in each stitch without increasing.
- Repeat rows without increasing until you have a piece that fits around your head.
- Once you reach the desired size, fasten off the first panel, and then create a second identical panel.
Assembling and Finishing:
Place the wrong sides of the two panels together, and slip stitch the edges, starting from one end and stopping at the other end where you want the face opening to begin.
- Sew together the required number of stitches from the bottom of the mask to leave an opening for the face.
- Turn the balaclava right side out and create an edging by making a round of double crochets around the face opening.
- Optionally, you can add a drawstring or chain through the front stitches for adjustability.
- Sew the cat ears onto the balaclava at the desired position.
- Weave in all the yarn tails and trim any excess yarn.
