This crochet pattern teaches you how to create a soft and beautifully shaped baby cardigan or dress using the classic top down yoke method. The design begins at the neckline and expands evenly with four corner increases, giving you full control over the fit and width.
Crochet Baby Cardigan

This approach makes the pattern easy to customize, whether you want a snug cardigan or a flowy dress. Once the yoke reaches the desired size, you can separate for the sleeves and continue with any stitch pattern you like for the body. It is a versatile, beginner friendly technique that works well for any baby size and yarn type.
Materials
- Yarn of your choice suitable for baby garments
- Crochet hook size suitable for your yarn
- Stitch markers
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle
Starting the Foundation Chain
- Make a slip knot.
- Create a foundation chain long enough for the baby’s neckline.
- Keep in mind that the chain must be divided into five sections for the two fronts, two sleeves and the back.
- Reserve four stitches where you will add the corner increases.
- Place stitch markers in all four corner stitches.

Working Row 1
- Work back across the foundation chain using double crochet or half double crochet.
- Follow the stitch distribution for the front panels, sleeves and back.
- Work until you reach the first marked corner stitch.
- Create the corner increase by working your chosen increase pattern into the marked stitch.
- Continue across the row repeating the corner increases at all four marked stitches.
- Finish the row and prepare to turn your work.
Creating the Corner Increases
- Work across the row until you reach a marked corner.
- Make an increase such as dc ch2 dc or 2dc ch2 2dc into the same stitch.
- Continue working your basic stitch across the next section.
- Repeat the same increase at every corner stitch.
- Work the rest of the row normally.

Shaping the Yoke
- Chain up and turn at the end of each row.
- Work your chosen stitch into every stitch across the row.
- When you reach a chain space from the previous corner increase work the same increase pattern into that space.
- Repeat this on all four corners in every row.
- Continue until the yoke is large enough to fit comfortably around the baby’s shoulders.
Separating for the Armholes
- Work across the row until you reach the first sleeve section.
- Skip all sleeve stitches to create the armhole.
- Join your working stitch to the next corner space with a chain or slip stitch.
- Repeat on the other sleeve to connect the panels.
- You will now have a connected body tube ready for the main body.

Working the Body or Skirt
- Continue working rows or rounds on the main body stitches.
- Choose any stitch pattern such as shell or fan stitches for the skirt or cardigan body.
- Work until you reach your desired length.
- Fasten off and weave in all ends.
