This creative and sustainable crochet project shows you how to turn an old bedsheet into a functional, stylish tote bag. Perfect for beginners and eco-conscious crafters, this pattern repurposes a queen-size sheet into continuous yarn.
Crochet Tote Bag
With simple stitches like double crochet and basic shaping, you'll create a roomy, sturdy tote perfect for errands, the beach, or everyday carry. Customizable in strap length and color, this bag proves that upcycled fashion can be both fun and fabulous.
Materials
- One queen-size bedsheet (cotton preferred)
- Fabric scissors
- 10mm crochet hook (adjust as needed)
- Stitch markers
- Yarn needle
Preparing the Sheet Yarn
- Trim off all seams from the bedsheet.
- Fold the sheet and cut it into long strips, stopping just before the edge.
- Unfold and cut diagonally to make one continuous yarn strand.
Base Chain & First Round
- Create a slip knot and place it on your hook.
- Chain 16 for the base.
- Chain 2 more for the turning chain.
- Work 1 double crochet (dc) into the third chain from the hook.
- Continue dc into each chain across.
- At the end of the row, place 2 dc in the last chain.
- Turn and continue working down the other side of the base chain.
- Complete the round and join with a slip stitch to the first dc.
Building the Body
- Chain 2 and turn your work.
- Work 1 dc in each stitch around.
- Continue for 8 total rounds, joining each round with a slip stitch.
Adding the Straps
- Find the center of the bag and mark 4 stitches on each side.
- Starting at the first marked stitch, chain 2 and dc across until reaching the mark.
- Chain 22 (or desired strap length).
- Slip stitch into the opposite marked stitch.
- Work 1 dc in the same stitch.
- Continue dc across the top to the next marker.
- Repeat the strap process on the other side: chain 22, slip stitch, and 1 dc in the same stitch.
Reinforcing the Straps
- Work continuous rounds of dc around the top and over each strap.
- This strengthens the straps and gives a polished look.
Finishing Touches
- Tie off your yarn securely.
- Use a yarn needle to weave in the ends neatly.
- Optional: Add a lining or button closure for extra functionality.
