Using just basic stitches and minimal shaping, it’s ideal for beginners yet rewarding for experienced crocheters looking to whip up a quick summer essential. Customize this Crochet Sun Hat with your favorite colors, ribbons, or edging styles to make it uniquely yours!

Materials Needed

  • Polyester macrame cord
  • 3mm crochet hook
  • Stitch marker
  • Scissors
  • Lighter (optional, to seal yarn ends)

Starting the Hat

Slip Knot and Foundation Chain

  • Make a slip knot
  • Chain 2

Round 1: Base Circle

  • Work 6 single crochets into the second chain from the hook
  • Slip stitch into the first single crochet
  • Place a stitch marker in this last stitch

Crown Increases

Round 2: Increase

  • Work 2 single crochets in each stitch around
  • Remove the stitch marker before the last stitch
  • Place 2 single crochets in that stitch
  • Mark the last stitch with the stitch marker
  • Continue working in continuous rounds; do not join with slip stitch anymore

Round 3: 1-2 Increase Pattern

  • Pattern: 1 single crochet, 2 single crochets in next stitch
  • Repeat this sequence all around
  • End with 1 single crochet before the stitch marker
  • Remove the stitch marker, place 2 single crochets in that stitch
  • Place marker in the last stitch

For Round 4: 2-1 Increase Pattern

  • Pattern: 1 single crochet in next 2 stitches, 2 single crochets in next
  • Repeat this all the way around

Round 5: 3-1 Increase Pattern

  • Pattern: 1 single crochet in next 3 stitches, 2 single crochets in 4th stitch
  • Repeat the pattern
  • End with 3 single crochets before the stitch marker
  • Place 2 single crochets in the stitch with the marker
  • Replace stitch marker in the last stitch

Round 6: 4-1 Increase Pattern

  • Pattern: 1 single crochet in next 4 stitches, 2 single crochets in 5th
  • Repeat all around
  • The crown diameter should now be around 7.5 inches

Hat Body (No Increases)

  • Remove the stitch marker
  • Insert 1 single crochet in next stitch
  • Replace the stitch marker in that first stitch
  • Work 1 single crochet in each stitch around continuously
  • Repeat this round for 22 rows
  • The body should measure approximately 4.5 inches from the last increase row

Brim of the Hat

  • Pattern: 1 single crochet in next 2 stitches, 2 single crochets in 3rd
  • Work 1 single crochet in the next 16 stitches
  • 2 single crochets in the next stitch

  • End with 2 single crochets in the last stitch
  • Place stitch marker in the last stitch

Row 2: Gradual Increases

  • Pattern: 1 single crochet in next 4 stitches, 2 single crochets in 5th
  • Then, 1 single crochet in next 17 stitches
  • 2 single crochets in the next stitch
  • Repeat pattern (17 sc, 2 sc) all the way around
  • Finish with 2 single crochets in the last stitch
  • Replace stitch marker in that last stitch

For Row 3: Final Increase Round

  • Pattern: 1 single crochet in next 6 stitches, 2 single crochets in 7th
  • Then, 1 single crochet in next 18 stitches
  • 2 single crochets in the 19th stitch
  • Repeat the sequence (18 sc, 2 sc) all around
  • Brim should now be approximately 4 inches wide

Finishing the Brim

 

Final Round Before Edging

  • After your last increase, place 1 single crochet in each remaining stitch
  • Remove the stitch marker
  • Slip stitch into the next stitch to close the round

Edging with Fan Stitch

 

Fan Stitch Pattern

  • Insert 1 single crochet in the next stitch
  • Skip 2 stitches
  • In the 3rd stitch, place 5 double crochets (this forms a fan)
  • Skip 2 stitches
  • In the 3rd stitch, insert 1 single crochet
  • Repeat this pattern (skip 2, 5 dc, skip 2, 1 sc) all around

Completing the Fan Edging

  • After your last fan, skip 2 stitches
  • In the 3rd stitch, insert a single crochet
  • If 2 stitches remain, slip stitch into the first single crochet of the first fan
  • Pull loop through to secure

Finishing Touches

Tying Off

  • Chain 1
  • Cut the yarn and pull through the loop to secure
  • Turn the hat inside out
  • Weave in the yarn tail neatly
