Crochet Christmas Deer Ornament & Coaster Tutorial
Materials Needed:
- Two different colors of yarn (3 mm recommended)
- A crochet hook (3.5 mm recommended)
- A needle
Body Pattern:
- Start with a magic ring.
- Chain 2 (this acts as your first fake double crochet).
- Do 9 double crochets into the ring. Along with the initial chain 2, this will give you a total of 10 stitches.
- Slip stitch into the first real double crochet (not the chain 2).
Round 2:
- Chain 2.
- Do one double crochet in each stitch around.
- Slip stitch into the first double crochet to close the round.
In Round 3 (Increase Round):
- Chain 2.
- Alternate the following around: do 2 double crochets in one stitch, then 1 double crochet in the next. This will increase the stitch count evenly around.
- Slip stitch into the first double crochet to close.
Round 4 (Further Increase):
- Chain 2.
- Follow this pattern around: 1 double crochet in one stitch, 1 double crochet in the next stitch, then 2 double crochets in the following stitch.
- Slip stitch to close the round.
Loop for Hanging:
- Chain about 20 (or more, depending on your preference for the length of the loop).
- Slip stitch into the base of the loop to secure.
- Cut the yarn and weave in the end with a needle.
Ears (Make 2):
Start with a slip stitch, then chain 6.
- Starting in the second chain from the hook, do a single crochet.
- Follow this pattern across the chain: single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, half double crochet, single crochet.
- Slip stitch into the last chain, then repeat the pattern on the other side of the chain foundation to create a symmetrical ear.
- Finish off and weave in ends.
Antlers (Make 2, with a different color yarn):
Start with a slip stitch, then chain 10.
- Begin in the second chain from the hook with a single crochet.
- Crochet one single crochet into each of the next two chains.
- Chain 3, then single crochet into the second chain from the hook, single crochet into the next chain, and single crochet back into the base chain.
- Repeat step 4 for a total of three protrusions to simulate an antler.
- Finish off, leaving a length of yarn for sewing.
Assembly:
- Using the yarn needle and the tail ends left from each part, sew the ears and antlers to the top of the head/body.
- When attaching the parts, aim to sew through back loops only to make the stitches less visible if using different colors.
Finishing Touches:
- Make sure all ends are securely weaved in.
- Attach the completed deer to your Christmas tree or use it as desired for decorations.
