Materials
- 2.5 mm crochet hook
- Polypropylene yarn (Tex 388)
- Tapestry needle
- Soldering iron with thin tip (for making holes in flip-flop)
- Rivets (optional)
- Buckle (optional)
- Havaianas flip-flops or similar as base
Making the Crochet Rings (Argolas)
Creating the Ring
- Leave a small yarn tail and wrap the yarn 10 times around your finger
- Carefully remove the wrapped yarn
- Insert hook and make the first loop
- Work single crochets all around the ring
Finishing the Ring
- Gently pull to tighten the shape
- Add one more single crochet, then slip stitch into the first stitch to join
- Pull yarn through, cut with tail, and make a chain
- Trim the tail and, if using polypropylene, melt the end to secure
Weaving and Securing
- Use tapestry needle to weave the yarn tail through the back stitches
- Make a small knot and secure the end
- Repeat the process to make multiple rings
Ring Count Guide
- Make 6 rings for the bottom
- Make 7 rings for the top
- For smaller sizes, reduce by two rings on each end and possibly one on the side
Joining the Crochet Rings
Joining Two Rings
- Align two rings front to front
- Insert hook through one stitch from each ring
- Slip stitch to join
- Repeat for at least four stitches to secure
- Leave a longer tail for finishing
Adding Additional Rings
- Insert hook through a stitch in the third ring, the previous join, and adjacent stitches
- Join using slip stitch or tapestry needle
- Attach fourth ring at toe placement with four slip stitches
Final Assembly
- Continue adding rings to create sandal base
- Ensure six rings at the bottom and seven at the top
- Adjust stitch connection points to prevent curling
- Use tapestry needle to reinforce joins and flatten the structure
Preparing the Flip-Flop Base
Cutting and Hole Placement
- Cut flip-flop strap, leaving 2 cm on both sides
Use soldering iron to make small holes on:
- Front part (below toe placement)
- Side strap areas
Avoid melting all the way through the sole
- Round off strap edges slightly
Crocheting onto the Flip-Flop Strap (Front)
Attaching to Holes
- Leave a long tail and make a slip knot
- Insert hook into bottom front hole and make two single crochets
- Move to top hole and work five single crochets
- Insert into side hole and make two single crochets
Securing the Ends
- Cut yarn, leave tail, and make a chain
- Use the tail to weave up over the cut strap for reinforcement
- Repeat on the opposite side
Crocheting the Front Strap (Center)
Starting the Center Strap
- Leave a tail and make two chains
- Chain three more (counts as first double crochet), plus two turning chains
- In the fourth chain from hook, make one double crochet
- In the next chain, make three double crochets
- Work one double crochet in the next two chains
Creating Texture
- Chain three and turn
- Work double crochets in back loops only
Attaching to Front Strap
- Attach the center strap to the flip-flop strap using double crochet stitches
- Use the yarn tail to weave in and secure
Attaching First Ring to Center Strap
- Position the first crochet ring over the strap center piece
- Using a tapestry needle, stitch each single crochet from the ring into the strap
- Ensure a firm, secure join
Crocheting the Back Strap (Adjustable)
Starting the Back Strap
- On one back side, count five stitches and attach yarn with a slip stitch
- Make a single crochet and chain one
- Work five half double crochets across
Textured Stitch Rows
- Make a slip stitch, chain one, and turn
- Alternate front post and back post half double crochets
- Skip the last stitch to slightly decrease
- Slip stitch along the side to move position
Repeat Rows
- Chain two, turn, and work five half double crochets
- Continue working textured rows
- Final row should have seven half double crochets
Securing the Strap
- Cut yarn, make a chain, and pull through
- Use yarn tail to sew up any gaps
- Securely stitch this section to the opposite side of the back strap
Making the Second Side
- Repeat the process for the second back strap
- Adjust start point and number of rows for symmetry
- You may need 11 rows of three half double crochets instead of 13
Reinforcing the Strap End
- Wrap the yarn tail around the end of the strap multiple times
- This makes it stiff for buckle insertion
Adding Optional Details (Rivets, Buckle, etc.)
For Adding Rivets (Optional)
- Place rivets onto the crocheted strap
- Use a pressing tool to secure
Adding Buckle (Optional)
- On one side, make five single crochet stitches at center
- In next row, decrease to three stitches
- Continue for nine rows of three single crochets
- Thread strap through buckle, fold over, and secure with slip stitches
Creating Longer Strap for Buckle
- On opposite side, make 11 rows of three single crochets
- Decrease last row to one single crochet
- Stiffen the end by wrapping yarn around it
Alternative Closures
- Instead of a buckle, use buttons, pearls, or simply crochet slip stitches to join
- Adjust number of rings for custom fit
