Materials

  • 100% cotton yarn
  • 3 mm crochet hook (optional: 3.5 mm or 4 mm for a looser texture)

Bag Construction

Starting the Base

  • Make a slip knot
  • Chain 24 stitches
  • Chain 3 more (counts as the first double crochet)
  • Double crochet into the 25th stitch
  • Mark the first double crochet and the bottom of the last stitch to identify the round's end
  • Work one double crochet into every stitch across the row
  • In the last stitch of the row, work two double crochets
  • Continue around the corner and work over the tail
  • Work one double crochet in each stitch on the other side
  • In the marked stitch at the bottom, work two double crochets
  • Slip stitch into the first double crochet to close the round

Setup Row

  • Chain 3 (counts as first double crochet)
  • Double crochet into the next two stitches (skip the stitch below the chain three)
  • Chain 1
  • Skip the next stitch
  • Double crochet into the following three stitches
  • Chain 1
  • Continue the pattern (three double crochets, chain one, skip one) around
  • Slip stitch into the chain three space to close the round

Basket Weave Pattern

  • Chain 2 (does not count as a stitch)
  • Work front post double crochets into the next three stitches
  • Chain 1
  • Work back post double crochets into the following three stitches
  • Chain 1
  • Alternate three front post and three back post double crochets with a chain one in between, around
  • Slip stitch into the first front post double crochet to close the round
  • Repeat this round two more times for a total of three rounds

Alternating Basket Weave Pattern

  • Chain 2 (does not count as a stitch)
  • Where there were front post stitches, work back post double crochets
  • Chain 1
  • Where there were back post stitches, work front post double crochets
  • Chain 1
  • Repeat this pattern for three rounds
  • Alternate the basket weave pattern every three rows for a total of 21 rows (7 repeats)

Finishing the Bag Top

  • Slip stitch into the first double crochet
  • Chain 1
  • Work one single crochet into each stitch and chain one space around
  • Work two rounds of single crochets
  • Cut the tail and perform an invisible join using a tapestry needle
  • Fasten off securely

Strap Construction

Starting the Strap

  • Leave a small tail for sewing
  • Make a slip knot
  • Chain 2
  • Insert the hook into the first stitch
  • Yarn over and pull through both loops

Continuing the Strap

  • Turn your work
  • Insert hook into the side knob, yarn over, pull up a loop, and complete the single crochet
  • Turn your work again and insert hook through both side bumps, yarn over, and pull up a loop
  • Yarn over and pull through both loops
  • Continue this process to the desired strap length (recommended 48 inches for adults)
  • Maintain even tension without pulling too tightly

Attaching the Strap

  • Position the strap on the inside of the bag about 1 cm from the side
  • Use the tail and tapestry needle to sew the strap securely in place, weaving in between stitches for a clean finish
  • Start sewing from the bottom up for extra strength
  • Weave the remaining tail into the middle of the strap to hide it
