Base of the Bag (Granny Square)

  • Round 1: Start with a magic loop.
  • Chain 3 (counts as 1 double crochet), then make 2 double crochets into the loop.
  • Repeat (chain 3, 3 double crochets) three times.
  • Finish with 1 chain and 1 half double crochet to connect the round.
  • Round 2: Chain 3 (counts as 1 double crochet), then make 1 double crochet into the half double crochet space from the previous round.

  • Repeat (3 double crochets, 1 chain) three times for the corners.
  • Make 2 double crochets into the half double crochet space, then 1 chain and 1 half double crochet to connect.
  • Round 3: Chain 3 (counts as 1 double crochet), then make 1 double crochet into the half double crochet space.
  • Repeat (7 double crochets, 1 chain) three times for the corners.
  • Make 2 double crochets into the half double crochet space, then 1 chain and 1 half double crochet to connect.
  • Subsequent Rounds (Rounds 4-7): Continue increasing the size of the granny square by adding 4 double crochets to each side in subsequent rounds.

Body of the Bag

  • Round 1: Locate the middle stitch of each side of the granny square.

  • For the sides, make 1 double crochet in each stitch, then an unfinished double crochet 2 together (skipping 3 stitches).
  • For the corners, make 2 double crochets, 3 chains, and 2 double crochets.

  • Identical Rounds: Continue working identical rounds for the body of the bag, starting each round with 3 chains and 1 half double crochet into the half double crochet space.

  • Slip stitch to connect.
  • Strap Handle: Start with a slip knot. Make 22 chains.
  • Make a standing stitch, then 1 single crochet in each stitch ("back pump").
  • Repeat (standing stitch, turn, 1 single crochet in each stitch) for 7 rows.
  • Leave enough tail and snip the yarn. Make another identical piece.
  • Sewing the Strap: Sew to enwrap the strap. Conceal the end.
