Materials Needed:
- Star Granny Squares (Tutorial recommended: mentioned in the video)
- Budget Yarn (Premiere Basics recommended)
- 5.5 mm crochet hook
- Fabric for lining (optional)
- Sewing machine or needle for hand sewing (optional)
Steps to Make the Bag:
Prepare the Granny Squares
- Create or locate two star granny squares.
- If desired, add an extra round of single crochet to each square to enlarge them.
Join the Squares
- Place two granny squares with right sides facing each other.
- Join them using a stitch of your choice (e.g., whipstitch, slip stitch, or single crochet) along one edge to form the front of the bag.
Create the Sides and Bottom of the Bag
- Start at one corner at the bottom of the joined squares.
- Fasten on yarn with a standing single crochet and make one single crochet in each stitch across the bottom.
- At the end of the row, chain 1 and turn your work.
- Complete two more rows of single crochet.
Create a Base for the Bag
- Chain 1 and make a row of single crochet in the front loops only across the row.
- Chain 1 and turn your work. This creates a ridge to form the bottom of the bag.
- Depending on the desired thickness, continue several more rows of regular single crochet.
Work on the Bag's Depth
- After achieving the desired base width, work up the back of the bag by repeating rows of single crochet until the bag is as tall as desired.
Form the Flap
- From the back top of the bag, continue with rows of single crochet.
- Include a row that creates a space for a buttonhole by chaining 3 and skipping 3 stitches in the middle of the row.
Create the Strap
- Chain a length that corresponds to the desired width of the strap.
- Double check width by measuring and adjust if necessary.
- Continue crocheting back and forth until the strap reaches the desired length for either a shoulder bag or a crossbody.
Attach the Strap
- Sew or crochet the ends of the strap to the sides at the top of the bag, ensuring not to twist the strap.
Add a Lining (Optional)
- Cut fabric to match the interior size of the bag.
- Sew the fabric to the inside of the bag to prevent items from falling through and to add stability.
Finishing Touches
- Sew on a button for the buttonhole on the flap.
- Block your finished bag to shape and size, especially if it feels stretched out.
Final Checks
- Ensure all seams are secure.
- Trim any excess threads, and make sure the liner is neatly attached if you added one.
