Crochet Cowl Tutorial
Materials:
- 9mm crochet hook
- Bulky yarn (Example: Alize Maxi Batic recommended for a 5 to 7mm hook)
- Scissors
- Darning needle
- Measuring tape
Pattern:
Starting Your Cowl:
- Begin with a slip knot.
- Chain 16 stitches.
- Starting in the second chain from the hook, work a slip stitch. Continue with slip stitches all along the row (15 slip stitches because the loop on the hook doesn't count as a stitch).
- At the end of the row, chain two (this will always be on the side where the triangle forms). Turn your work around.
Forming the Triangle:
- Skip the first stitch, insert the hook into the second stitch and work a slip stitch.
- For the rest of the row, insert the hook into the back loop only of each stitch and work slip stitches. At the end of this row, you will still have 15 stitches.
- At the end of the row, chain 1 (this will be on the straight edge side), turn your work around.
Repeating Rows to Increase:
- Continue with the pattern by alternately chaining 2 and chaining 1 at each end of the row as you turn the work. This creates one straight edge and one increasing (triangular) edge.
- Keep working slip stitches in the back loop only until your work measures 25 cm from the starting point.
Decreasing Rows to Form the Cowl:
- For the decreasing rows, continue with slip stitches in each back loop only.
- To decrease, skip the last stitch of the row, then chain 1, turn your work, and start slip stitching again (back loop only).
- Repeat this decrease until you're left with 15 stitches to mirror the beginning of the scarf.
Joining Both Ends:
- Layout the scarf, ensuring the straight edges align.
- Using your crochet hook, start slip stitching both sides together from the first to the last stitch.
- Once done, chain one, cut the yarn leaving a tail, pull through the loop and tighten.
Finishing Touches:
- Weave in the ends with a darning needle, hiding your yarn tails within the stitches for a neat finish.
- Turn the cowl right side out.
Tips:
- Ensure your slip stitches are not too tight for easier crocheting in subsequent rows.
- When joining, take your time to align the stitches correctly for a neat seam.
