Imagine snuggling up in a big, soft Crochet Chunky Blanket that you made all by yourself. That's the joy of crocheting your own chunky blanket. It's all about picking your favorite colors of yarn and turning them into something warm and cozy. With each stitch, you see your blanket grow, stitch by stitch, row by row.
Crochet Chunky Blanket
Materials:
- 4 skeins of Bernat Blanket Yarn (or equivalent bulky yarn)
- 12 mm crochet hook (although 8 mm is recommended for the yarn, a larger hook gives better drape)
Starting the Blanket:
Begin with a Slip Knot:
- Make a slip knot on your hook to start your chain.
Create Chain:
- For the blanket size mentioned (4x5 ft), you should chain an even number. For resizing, approximately 17 chains are needed per foot in width. If you followed the example, you would chain 60 for a 4 ft wide blanket.
Add Turning Chain:
- Once you've chained an even number appropriate for your desired blanket width, add 2 more chains. These extra chains will act as your turning chain.
Pattern:
First Row Setup:
- Starting in the second chain from the hook, complete a single crochet (SC) and a double crochet (DC) in the same stitch.
Skip and Stitch:
- Skip the next chain. In the following chain, work a SC and DC into the same stitch.
Repeat Across:
- Continue the pattern of SC + DC, skip one chain, SC + DC in the next chain, until you reach the end of the row.
Last Stitch of Row:
- In the very last chain, work one SC, chain one, and turn your work.
Subsequent Rows (One Row Repeat):
Row Repeat Setup:
- The pattern is a one-row repeat of the SC + DC combination. At the beginning of the new row, work a SC and a DC into the first SC stitch from the previous row (you'll see a diagonal bar of yarn to help identify the stitch).
Continue the Pattern:
- Keep repeating SC + DC in the SC from the previous row until you reach the end.
End of Row:
- At the end of each row, finish with a single SC, chain one, and turn your work.
Changing Colors:
Color Change at Row's End:
- To change colors, start a SC as usual, but instead of finishing it with the old color, bring in the new yarn to complete the stitch. Tie the ends together if necessary and weave the tails into the sides.
Using Fisherman’s Knot:
- If you don't mind a knot or you're adding a new ball of yarn, the fisherman's knot (also known as magic knot) is recommended for joining the yarn ends.
Finishing the Blanket:
Final Round:
- Once your blanket has reached the desired height, work your last round.
Fasten Off:
- Chain one to fasten off, then cut the yarn, leaving a tail to weave in the ends using the crochet hook or a yarn needle.
Weave Ends:
- Securely weave in all the ends.
Optional Fray Check:
- To prevent frayed ends, apply a dab of Fray Check to the tips of your yarn where needed.
