Crochet Bumble Bee Granny Square
Perfect for both beginners and seasoned crafters, it combines classic granny square techniques with a fun, bee-inspired twist. Materials:
- Yarn (weight 4 for body and weight 3 for wings)
- Scissors
- Stitch marker (optional)
- Yarn needle
- Hooks: Size 7 (4.5 mm) for the body and size 6 (3.5 mm) for the wings
- Colors used in the example: Black (Super Saver), Carrot (Super Saver), Cornmeal (Super Saver), blue colorway (dragonfly square reference), Grand Canal (Stylecraft), Confectionary (Premier Everyday Dots)
Body Pattern:
Round 1:
- Start with an adjustable ring.
- Chain 4 (counts as one double crochet + chain one).
- Double crochet into the ring, chain one.
- Repeat the double crochet and chain one 10 times into the ring (total of 12 sets including the starting chain 4).
- Slip stitch to join and fasten off first color.
Round 2:
- Attach black yarn.
- Chain 3 (counts as a double crochet), double crochet in the same space, chain two.
- In the next chain space, start the first double crochet, then begin the next, and complete them together (two double crochets together stitch).
- Chain two and repeat around.
- Fasten off black yarn.
In Round 3:
- Attach cornmeal color (yellow) yarn.
- Chain 3, double crochet twice into the same space.
- Skip the set of two double crochets together from the previous round.
- Double crochet 3 in the next chain two-space.
- Continue with 3 double crochets in each space around.
- Fasten off yellow yarn.
Round 4:
- Attach black yarn.
- Double crochet three together clusters across each of the two double crochets together points from round 2.
- Turn work, single crochet 12, form three yarn over bobbles, and close the head with a five double crochet popcorn stitch.
- Shape the body by adding slip stitches and single crochets.
- Fasten off yarn.
Round 5:
- Use blue yarn and work in the back bars of stitches across, adding extra stitches where necessary for a total of 40 stitches.
- Evenly single crochet 10 stitches around the head part.
- Join.
For Round 6:
- Continue with blue yarn.
- Chain two, half double crochet into the same stitch.
- Half double crochet and single crochet across, placing increases as needed to shape the square.
- Slip stitch and half double crochet across the head part of the bee.
- Join and fasten off.
Round 7:
- Create a more defined square shape by working half-double, double, and treble crochets with increases at the corners.
- Join and fasten off.
Round 8 (Border):
- Attach border yarn (optional color change).
- Work single crochet stitches along each side, with three single crochets in each corner.
- Fasten off.
Antenna and Stinger:
- For the antenna, chain 5, slip stitch to join popcorn stitches, then chain 5 again.
- Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
- For the stinger, use black yarn to chain and form a triangle between the lower sections of the yellow parts.
- Fasten off, weave in ends.
Wings (Make 2):
- Start with a chain of 4, double crochet in 4th chain from the hook.
- Work back and forth in turned rows, increasing in each row to create a triangle-shaped wing (total of 7 rows).
- Shape the wing by skipping spaces and working double crochets, then finalize with a row of single crochets around the wing perimeter.
