Materials Needed:
- Brown yarn (weight 4) - used throughout the project as the first color.
- Assorted green and brown yarns of different textures, including mohair and velvet, for the second color.
- 5.5 mm crochet hook.
- Beads (optional for embellishment).
- Tapestry needle.
- Button (optional for closure).
- Lining material like a pillowcase (highly recommended for durability).
Steps
Bag Panels (make 2):
- Make a slip knot and chain 38.
- Starting from the fourth chain from the hook, make 36 double crochets (first double crochet is counted as the third chain plus one double crochet).
- Chain 3 at the end of each row (counts as the first stitch of the next row).
- Continue double crocheting for 20 rows, changing the second yarn as desired to create a gradient effect.
- Weave in all loose ends when each panel is completed.
Flap (made on one of the panels):
- At the end of the 20th row on the back panel, chain 3 and turn.
- Working in the back loops only, double crochet in each stitch across.
- For the second row of the flap, use both loops for double crochet.
- Continue double crocheting for 9 more rows (10 rows total for the flap).
- On the 10th row, start with a chain 3, double crochet decrease, then double crochet regularly until you have 16 stitches.
- Chain 1, skip a stitch, then continue double crocheting.
- End the row with a double crochet decrease.
- Cut yarn and weave in ends.
Adding Beads (optional):
- Use a tapestry needle threaded with yarn to add beads to one of the panels before crocheting it.
- Push beads up to where you want them as you crochet.
Side Panel/Strap:
- Make a slip knot and chain 10.
- Start in the fourth chain from the hook and make 7 double crochets (counting the chain 3 as a double crochet).
- Chain 3, turn, and make a double crochet in each stitch across.
- Repeat this step until the panel wraps around the sides of the bag panels.
- Once the desired length is reached, switch to single crochet for the strap. Continue until it's the length you want.
- Sew one end of the strap onto the side panel.
Assembly:
- Use the tapestry needle and yarn to sew the side panel around the edges of the back and front panels.
- Attach the button on the 10th row of the front panel for closure.
Finishing Touches:
- Add flowers or decorative elements by crocheting freehand designs and sewing them onto the bag.
- Add lining by fitting a cut pillowcase inside the bag and sewing it.
- Finally, add any additional charms, beads, or personal touches.
