Supplies Needed:

  • Crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Two different colors of yarn (black and white recommended, but not mandatory)

Instructions:

Starting with the Skull:

Magic Ring:

  • Start with a magic ring.
  • Chain 2 (these chains don't count as a stitch).
  • Crochet 9 double crochets into the magic ring.

Creating the Skull's Eyes:

  • Chain 5, then do 1 double crochet.
  • Chain 3, then do another double crochet into the magic ring.
  • Chain 5, and slip stitch into the first double crochet to secure.
  • Hide the yarn ends.

Row 2 (Building the Skull):

  • Chain 1 and make 1 single crochet into the same stitch.
  • Crochet 8 single crochets evenly around.
  • Into the chain loop, do 6 single crochets.
  • Slip stitch into the next loop, chain 3 upwards, add 3 double crochets, and 3 more chains, then slip stitch into this ring.
  • Repeat the pattern of 6 single crochets into the next loop, and slip stitch into the first single crochet of the previous row.

Row 3 (Changing Color & Square Formation):

  • Change yarn color (to white for this pattern).
  • Slip stitch to prepare for square shaping.
  • Do a standing double crochet into the stitch right after the last completed stitch.

First Corner:

  • Do 2 double crochets into the same stitch.
  • Chain 3, then add 2 more double crochets into the same stitch.
  • Crochet 1 double crochet into the next stitch, followed by 3 half double crochets, and then another double crochet.

Making Corners:

  • Repeat the corner pattern (2 double crochets, chain 3, 2 double crochets into same stitch) for each corner of the square.
  • Add 4 half double crochets between corners.
  • Secure the row with a slip stitch once you complete the round.

Making the Square Larger:

  • Chain 3 up, add 2 double crochets.
  • Make a corner (2 double crochets, chain 3, 2 double crochets in loop).
  • Continue with double crochets until the next loop.

  • To finish the square, end with a slip stitch. You can change colors if desired or continue with the same color.
