Get ready to show some love with your crochet skills! This Valentine's Day, you can make a charming crochet heart top that's perfect for the occasion. With your trusty hook and some lovely yarn, you'll learn how to make cute hearts and turn them into a unique piece of clothing.
Crochet Heart Top
Material:
- Yarn (amount not specified; use as much as needed, keeping track of leftover)
- Crochet hook (size 3.75 millimeters)
Starting at the Bottom:
Create a slip knot on your hook, chain 8.
- Double crochet into the third chain space from the hook; then in each of the remaining five spaces place one double crochet. This counts as 6 double crochets plus your chain 2 (considered a stitch), making 7 stitches in total.
- Chain 2, turn your work, skip the very first stitch and double crochet in the second stitch and every stitch until the end (5 stitches total), resulting in 6 double crochets plus your chain 2 — seven stitches in total.
Increasing:
Chain 8 again; then repeat the first row by double crocheting starting from the third loop, working all the way down so you have 6 double crochets plus the chain 2, making 7 in total.
- At the fourth double crochet top, work a single crochet into that stitch and begin working foundation double crochets: Yarn over, insert the hook into the chain, pull yarn through one loop, yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over, pull through the final two loops. Repeat this until you have 7 foundation double crochets.
Creating the Heart Pattern:
Chain 2, turn your work, skip the first stitch, double crochet into the second, and continue for a total of 6 double crochets, plus the chain 2.
- Chain 5, slip stitch into the second and third chain from the hook, chain 2 more, and then work double crochets starting from a double crochet stitch, right after the gap, and until you are right before the next gap.
- Repeat the chain 5, slip stitch, chain 2, and double crochet steps to create the hearts.
Repeating the Pattern:
- Continue chaining 8 for each new row on one side, alternating with foundation double crochets on the other side as you go up, following the pattern to make the hearts and gaps.
- Work until the top fits around the midsection of your ribcage when it can cover the chest if continued upwards.
Covering the Chest:
- Now, without creating any more gaps or increases, switch to making rows of double crochets back and forth to cover the chest area, doing enough rows to properly cover the chest (9 rows were used in the video, adjust as necessary).
Adding Holes for the Ties:
- Chain 1, and work single crochets all the way down your row of double crochets, keeping track of the number of single crochets. On the following row, create as many chain-3 gaps for the ties as needed by chaining 3. Skipping stitches, and single crocheting into the following stitch.
The Scrunch:
- Find the middle heart of the top, pick up the fabric to create ruffles to your liking, pass the yarn through all the stitches, and tie off securely.
Straps:
- Decide where on the top you want the straps to go and attach the yarn at these points. Chain a long piece (200 chains mentioned in the video) for each strap.
- Once the straps are made, weave them through the holes you created and tie them securely at the back.
Finishing Touches:
- Sew in all the loose ends with a darning needle or a crochet hook to secure them.
