Materials:

  • 100% cotton sport weight yarn (you can double it or use a DK weight instead for a quicker project)
  • 4 mm crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle

Pattern Overview:

Starting at the Bottom:

  • Begin with a circular base.

Body of the Holder:

  • Work your way up in spirals, with increases initially then working straight up.

Strap:

  • Finish with a Romanian cord strap.

Pattern:

Base:

  • Make a slip knot.
  • Chain 4.
  • Do 10 double crochets (dc) in the first chain to form a circle. (The initial chain counts as the first dc).
  • Slip stitch to the top of the beginning chain to close the circle.

Body (Round 1):

  • Chain 3 (counts as the first dc).
  • Do 2 dc in each stitch around.
  • Slip stitch to the top of the beginning chain.

For Larger Bottles:

  • If the base is too small, add an extra round by alternating between 2 dc in one stitch and 1 dc in the next.

Body (Straight Rounds):

  • Without increasing, dc in each stitch around.
  • To create a mesh pattern for airflow and flexibility, after a few straight rounds, chain 5, skip 2 stitches, then dc in the next. Repeat around.
  • Adjust the mesh by doing chain 2, skip 2 stitches, then dc.
  • Continue with the mesh pattern until you achieve the desired height.

Top Edging:

  • Chain 3, then dc in each gap or space around with 3 dc in each gap for a sturdy edge.

Strap (Romanian Cord):

  • Chain 2, then single crochet in the first of these two chains.
  • Utilize the loop below the stitches to do single crochets loosely, ensuring you go through all 4 strands if the yarn is doubled.
  • Continue until the strap is your desired length (suggested 120cm).
  • Sew the strap securely to the opposite side of the holder’s top edge.

Finishing Touches:

  • Weave in all ends with a tapestry needle.
  • Attach the strap securely enough to hold the weight of a full water bottle.

Additional Tips:

  • Always measure the holder against your bottle as you go to ensure a good fit.
  • For a tighter or looser fit, adjust the number of increases in the base or the length of the straight rounds.
