Crochet V Neck Top Free Pattern You Can Customize To Any Size

March 9, 2026 by Content Director

This crochet V neck top pattern is a simple, wearable design built from two flat panels and a clean stitched texture that looks polished without being complicated. The fit is fully adjustable because you set the panel width from your own bust or hip measurement, and you can choose your exact body length, armhole depth, and neckline depth.

The front panel is shaped into a V by splitting at the center and working each side separately with easy decreases at the neck edge, giving you a flattering neckline and neat shoulder straps. You can keep it cropped or make it tunic length, wear it as a summer top on its own, or layer it over a fitted tee or tank for year round styling.

Materials

  • Light weight cotton or cotton blend yarn approximately 200 to 300 g depending on size and length
  • 3.5 mm crochet hook or hook that gives you a fabric you like
  • Measuring tape
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle
  • Stitch markers

Abbreviations and Notes

  • ch chain
  • sc single crochet
  • dc double crochet
  • st stitch
  • sk skip
  • rep repeat
  • RS right side
  • WS wrong side
  • ch 3 at the start of a row counts as 1 dc unless you prefer it not to, stay consistent
  • The main texture is a simple repeat that creates paired dc groups with a skipped stitch between them
  • This pattern is written for made to measure sizing so it fits any body without complicated grading
  • All steps are written as single level bullet points only

Fit and Measurements You Will Use

  • Bust or hip whichever is wider this becomes the controlling measurement
  • Desired ease choose how relaxed you want the fit
  • Suggested ease 0 to 2 in 0 to 5 cm for fitted 2 to 4 in 5 to 10 cm for relaxed
  • Finished top width should equal your bust or hip plus ease
  • Each panel width is half of the finished top width
  • Length decide cropped waist length or long
  • Armhole depth measure from top of shoulder down to underarm or use a favorite top as reference
  • V neck depth measure from shoulder line down to the point you want the V to end

Quick Sizing Math

  • Finished circumference = bust or hip + ease
  • One panel width = finished circumference ÷ 2
  • Example bust 36 in and 2 in ease gives finished 38 in then one panel is 19 in

Gauge Check

  • Crochet a swatch of the main stitch for 12 to 14 rows
  • Measure 4 in 10 cm across and count stitches and rows
  • Use this to estimate how many chains you need for panel width
  • If you do not want to swatch you can chain and measure directly which works well for this design

Main Stitch Pattern Explained

  • Row 1 is a full sc row to stabilize the edge
  • Row 2 onward uses this repeat across
  • Ch 3 counts as dc then sk 1 st then 2 dc in next st then sk 1 st then 2 dc in next st and keep repeating
  • The row ends with 1 dc in the last st so the edge stays straight and neat

Back Panel

Back Panel Foundation

  • Measure the target width of one panel using the fit math above
  • Make a foundation chain in a multiple of 2 + 1 until the chain measures the panel width
  • Check the chain without stretching it too hard

For Back Panel Row 1

  • Sc in the second ch from the hook
  • Sc in each ch across
  • Turn

Back Panel Row 2

  • Ch 3
  • Sk 1 st
  • 2 dc in next st
  • Rep sk 1 st then 2 dc in next st across
  • Dc in last st
  • Turn

For Back Panel Rows 3 to Underarm

  • Ch 3
  • Sk 1 st
  • 2 dc in next st
  • Rep sk 1 st then 2 dc in next st across
  • Dc in last st
  • Turn
  • Continue until the panel reaches your underarm height from the bottom edge

Back Panel Upper Section to Strap Height

  • Keep working the same stitch pattern with no shaping
  • Continue until the back panel matches the full height of the front including straps
  • Fasten off and leave a long tail for seaming

Front Panel

Front Panel Foundation and Lower Section

  • Make the same foundation chain as the back panel so both panels match
  • Work Row 1 exactly the same as the back panel
  • Work Rows 2 onward in the same main stitch pattern
  • Continue until the front panel reaches the same underarm height as the back panel

Marking the Center for the V Neck

  • Lay the front panel flat
  • Find the center stitch of the top edge and place a stitch marker
  • If you have an odd number of stitches there will be one true center stitch
  • If you have an even number of stitches the center is between two stitches and you can mark the two middle stitches

Creating the V Neck Split

  • You will now work the left side and right side separately
  • The neck edge is the inner edge nearest the center marker
  • The armhole edge is the outer edge

Left Front Strap Setup Row

  • Work the main stitch pattern across until you reach the center marker area
  • Stop so that you finish the row at the neck edge for that side
  • Turn

Left Front Strap Decrease Rows

  • Ch 3
  • Work the main stitch pattern across the strap section
  • At the end of the row on the neck edge create the decrease by not working the final stitch nearest the neck edge or by skipping the last stitch so the strap gets narrower gradually
  • Turn
  • Rep this decrease on every row only on the neck edge
  • Continue until the strap reaches the same height as the back panel

For Left Front Strap Width Adjustment

  • If you want wider straps decrease every 2 rows instead of every row
  • If you want a sharper V decrease every row
  • If you want a shallow V decrease every 3 rows

Left Front Strap Finish

  • When the strap height matches the back panel fasten off
  • Leave a long tail

Right Front Strap Setup

  • Rejoin yarn on the opposite side of the center marker
  • Start at the neck edge and work outward to the armhole edge
  • Work the main stitch pattern across the strap section
  • Turn

Right Front Strap Decrease Rows

  • Ch 3
  • Work the main stitch pattern across
  • At the end of the row on the neck edge decrease the same way as the left side
  • Turn
  • Rep until the strap height matches the back panel
  • Fasten off and leave a long tail

Making the V Point Neat

  • If you want the V point to be cleaner you can stop 1 to 2 in above the marker and sew the V point neatly during edging
  • If the V point is too sharp for your preference reduce the number of decrease rows

Assembly

  • Place front and back panels RS together
  • Match strap ends and edges
  • Sew shoulder seams using a needle and the long tails or use slip stitch join with hook
  • Make sure both shoulders are the same width

Side Seams

  • With RS together align the side edges
  • Starting from the bottom hem sew upward
  • Stop where you want the armhole opening to begin
  • Repeat on the other side
  • Weave in ends

Finishing Edges

Neckline Edging

  • Attach yarn at one shoulder seam
  • Sc evenly around the neckline including down one side of the V and up the other side
  • At the V point work 1 sc then ch 1 then 1 sc in the same point to help it lay flat
  • Sl st to join
  • Fasten off

Armhole Edging

  • Attach yarn at the underarm seam
  • Sc evenly around the armhole
  • Sl st to join
  • Fasten off
  • Repeat for the second armhole

Bottom Hem Edging Optional

  • Attach yarn at a side seam
  • Sc evenly around the bottom edge
  • Sl st to join
  • Fasten off

Customization Options

  • For a cropped top stop the panels at high waist
  • For a longer top continue the body rows to tunic length
  • For a looser fit add more ease in the sizing math and chain longer
  • For a deeper V keep decreasing for more rows and start the split lower
  • For a modest V start the split higher and decrease fewer rows
  • For stronger structure use cotton and a slightly smaller hook
  • For a drapier look use a slightly larger hook

Troubleshooting

  • If the neckline flares add one more sc round or tighten your edging tension
  • If the V point puckers reduce stitches at the point and try the sc ch 1 sc method
  • If straps feel too narrow decrease less often
  • If the top feels tight add width by increasing the starting chain and redoing the panels
  • If side seams pull block the panels to the same width before seaming
