Crochet Sedge Stitch Tutorial
Materials:
- A 4.5 mm crochet hook
- Yarn (used in the tutorial was 'big twist yarn in the color coral')
Pattern Instructions:
Starting Chain:
- Create a slip knot and then chain a multiple of 3. For the example, chain 24. (To chain, yarn over and pull through the loop already on your hook.)
Row 1:
Start in the second chain from the hook with a half double crochet (HDC): Yarn over, insert hook into the second chain, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through all three loops on the hook.
- In the same chain, work a double crochet (DC): Yarn over, insert into the same chain, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through two loops, yarn over and pull through two loops.
- Skip the next two chains.
- In the third chain, start with a single crochet (SC): Insert hook, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through both loops.
- In the same chain, work a HDC and then a DC.
- Continue the pattern: skip 2 chains, in the next chain work [SC, HDC, DC] until you get to the end of the row.
- When you have 4 chains left, skip 2 chains. In the third chain, work an SC, HDC, and end with a DC.
- In the very last chain, work a SC to finish the row.
- Chain 1 to turn and start the next row.
Row 2:
Work a HDC into the SC space directly below the chain 1 from the previous row.
- In the same SC, work a DC.
- Skip the stitches of the HDC and DC from the previous row, then work into the next SC [SC, HDC, DC].
- Repeat the pattern across: Skip the next two stitches, work into the SC [SC, HDC, DC].
- Continue until the end of the row.
- To complete the row, skip to the next SC and work an SC, then chain 1 to turn.
Subsequent Rows:
- Repeat Row 2 for as many rows as desired for your project.
- Each SC should have a cluster of SC, HDC, and DC worked into it from the previous row.
Finishing the Project:
- When you get to your desired length, finish off by cutting the yarn, pulling the hook up and out of the loop, and pulling tight.
- Secure the end with a knot if necessary.
- Weave in any remaining ends to clean up your work.
