Crochet Extended Single Stitch Pattern For Beginners

January 7, 2025 by Adnan

If you're want to add a little twist to your crochet projects, the Extended Single Crochet Stitch is a fantastic option to consider. This simple yet effective stitch gives your work an extra bit of texture and density, making it perfect for those cozy blankets, snug scarves, or anything else you're keen to whip up.

Materials Needed:

  • Light weight yarn (Number 3 DK yarn)
  • 4 mm crochet hook (or Number 4 yarn and a 5 mm crochet hook if you don't have the former)

Instructions:

Creating the Foundation Chain:

  • Start with a slip knot on your hook.
  • Chain any number of stitches (chains) that suits your project. No specific stitch count is needed. For a practice sample, chain 10.

Beginning the Extended Single Crochet:

  • You will skip the first chain from the hook and then work into the second chain.
  • Insert your hook into the second chain.
  • Yarn over (wrap the yarn around your hook) and pull up a loop (you will have two loops on your hook).
  • Yarn over and pull through the first loop on your hook only (you will still have two loops on your hook).

  • Yarn over again and pull through both loops on your hook.
  • This completes your first extended single crochet (ESC).

Completing the Row:

  • Repeat the steps of extended single crochet (Steps 2-5) in each chain across the row.
  • At the end of the row, you should have a series of ESC stitches.

Continuing the Pattern:

  • To start a new row, chain one and turn your work.
  • Work the ESC into the first stitch and into each stitch across for the entire row. The ESC is worked into the stitches rather than the chains now.
  • Continue to work in rows of ESC until you've reached the desired size for your project.
