Materials:

  • Scissors
  • 4 mm crochet hook
  • Stitch marker
  • Yarn needle
  • 9 mm safety eyes
  • Chunky yarn in red, green, and white (James C. Brett Flutterby yarn was used)
  • Pins
  • Toy stuffing

Pattern Body (in red yarn):

Round 1:

  • Start with a magic ring and work 6 single crochets (SC) into the ring.

Round 2:

  • Perform 6 increases by working 2 SC in each stitch around (total 12 SC).

After Round 3:

  • 1 SC in the next stitch, increase in the following stitch repeat 6 times (total 18 SC).

Round 4:

  • 2 SC, then an increase repeat 6 times (total 24 SC).

Round 5:

  • 3 SC, then an increase repeat 6 times (total 30 SC).

For Round 6:

  • SC in each stitch around (total 30 SC).

Round 7:

  • 4 SC, then an increase repeat 6 times (total 36 SC).

Round 8:

  • 5 SC, then an increase repeat 6 times (total 42 SC).

In Rounds 9-11:

  • SC in each stitch around (total 42 SC).

Belly (change to white yarn):

After Round 12:

  • 5 SC, then a decrease repeat 6 times (total 36 SC).

Round 13:

  • 4 SC, then a decrease repeat 6 times (total 30 SC).

Round 14:

  • 3 SC, then a decrease repeat 6 times (total 24 SC).

For Round 15:

  • 2 SC, then a decrease repeat 6 times (total 18 SC).

Round 16:

  • 1 SC, then a decrease repeat 6 times (total 12 SC).

Round 17:

  • Perform 6 decreases (total 6 SC), then fasten off, leaving a tail to sew the opening closed.

Fins (make 2, in red yarn):

  • Start with a magic ring, chain 1, then work 8 SC into the ring. Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Tail (in red yarn):

  • Chain 5, starting in the second chain from the hook: slip stitch, SC, half double crochet (HDC), slip stitch in the next, chain 5, repeat the pattern. Fasten off leaving a tail for sewing.

Leaves (in green yarn):

  • Start with a magic ring, work 8 SC into the ring.
  • Chain 4, starting in the second chain from the hook: SC, HDC, slip stitch, slip stitch into the next stitch on the magic ring. Repeat around to form 8 leaves. Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.

Stem (in green yarn):

  • Form a slip knot, chain 4, starting in the second chain from hook: SC, slip stitch, then fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.

Assembly:

  • Sew the fins between rounds 11 and 12 of the body, approximately 3 stitches away from each eye.
  • Sew the tail at the back of the whale, covering any yarn color changes for a neat finish.
  • Attach the leaves on top of the whale's body.
  • Sew the stem onto the center of the leaves.
  • Place the safety eyes between rounds 9 and 10, approximately 13 stitches apart.
  • Lastly, embroider a few white stitches over the body to mimic strawberry seeds.

Finishing:

  • Weave in all ends, and your strawberry whale is complete!
