Materials Needed:
- Lightweight 3 Yarn
- 3.75 mm Crochet Hook
Hexagon Pattern (Make 3 for the back, 2 with straps for the front):
Round 1:
- Prepare a magic circle and chain up 3 (this counts as your first extended double crochet).
- Make 2 more extended double crochets into the circle. (To make an extended double crochet: yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull through, yarn over, pull through 1 loop, yarn over, pull through 2 loops, yarn over, pull through the last 2 loops.)
- Chain 3. Repeat the process of placing 3 extended double crochets into the circle, followed by a chain of 3. Do this five times in total to create 5 sets.
- Join by slip stitching into the third chain from the start.
Round 2:
- Slip stitch into each of the next extended double crochets and into the chain space to position your yarn correctly.
- Chain up 3 and place 2 more extended double crochets into the same chain space.
- Chain 3, then in the same chain space, place another set of 3 extended double crochets.
- This completes your first shell.
- Chain 1, then move to the next chain space to create the next shell by repeating the shell pattern: 3 extended double crochets, chain 3, 3 extended double crochets.
- Continue around, placing a shell in each chain space and chaining 1 between each shell until you reach the beginning.
- Join with a slip stitch into the top of the starting chain.
Subsequent Rounds:
- Begin each new round by slip stitching into the correct position (chain space) as before.
- In each chain space, create a shell (3 extended double crochets, chain 3, 3 extended double crochets).
- After the shell, make additional extended double crochets as the pattern dictates to create separation posts between shells, progressively increasing the number of separation posts by two in each round.
- Continue until the hexagon reaches the desired size based on your bust measurement divided by 4.
Adding Straps (for 2 hexagons only):
- On your last round for the two front hexagons, create a strap by chaining 3 and turning your work to continue building up the strap.
- Add shells and single extended double crochets per the pattern to reach the desired strap length.
- Finish each strap with a shell pattern for aesthetic cohesion.
Assembly:
- Lay out your five hexagons (3 back, 2 front with straps) on a flat surface to form the vest shape.
- Seam the sides and shoulders together using a slip stitch, working only through the inside loops to create a less bulky join.
- Add a border around the armholes and along the edges of the vest by double crocheting around each edge.
- To finish, you can add a border across the bottom, sides, and neckline.
Closing Strap:
- Chain until you reach the desired length for a closing strap.
- Add a decorative flower or similar detail at each end by creating petal motifs through a combination of chain stitches and slip stitches into a ring, followed by layers of double crochets worked together.
- Attach the strap to the vest as desired for closure.
