Materials

  • Double knitting (DK) yarn
  • 4 mm crochet hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • Optional: Pom-pom maker or cardboard circles

Available Sizes

  • 0–3 months: 62 chains, 9 rounds
  • 3–6 months: 64 chains, 11 rounds
  • 6–12 months: 70 chains, 13 rounds
  • 1–2 years: 74 chains, 15 rounds

Ribbed Brim

  • Start with a slip knot and leave a long tail.
  • Chain required number based on size (see above).
  • Skip the first 3 chains; double crochet (DC) in each chain across.
  • Join the first and last stitch with a slip stitch to form a round.
  • Chain 3 (counts as first DC).

  • Work alternating front post DC (FPDC) and back post DC (BPDC) around.
  • Repeat FPDC/BPDC pattern for one more round.
  • Change yarn color if desired.
  • Work another round of alternating FPDC and BPDC.

Hat Body

Round 1:

  • [Single crochet, ch 3, single crochet in next stitch]
  • Repeat around.
  • Slip stitch to join.

Round 2:

  • Chain 3.
  • Puff stitch in same space.
  • [Skip 3 stitches, SC in 4th, ch 3, puff stitch in same stitch]
  • Repeat around. Join with slip stitch.

For Round 3:

  • Chain 3 (counts as DC), DC, ch 2, 2 DC in each loop around.
  • Join with slip stitch.

Alternate puff stitch round and 2 DC, ch 2, 2 DC round until the desired height is reached based on the size:

  • 0–3 months: 9 rounds
  • 3–6 months: 11 rounds
  • 6–12 months: 13 rounds
  • 1–2 years: 15 rounds

Decreasing the Top

  • Chain 3, begin a DC but leave last loop unworked, repeat in next stitch, yarn over and pull through all loops — decrease made.
  • Repeat this decrease around.
  • SC in the middle of each stitch around.
  • Work 3 SC together — repeat 5 times.
  • Fasten off and weave in all ends.
