Materials:

  • 6 mm hook
  • Worsted weight yarn
  • Bubble eyes (optional)

Abbreviations:

  • Ch: chain
  • St: stitch
  • Dc: double crochet
  • Sl st: slip stitch

Instructions:

Body:

Chain 3 and slip stitch in the first chain.

  • Chain 1 and do 12 double crochets in the middle.
  • Slip stitch on top of the first double crochet, chain 1, and do 2 double crochets in the same space.
  • Jump over to the next stitch and do 2 double crochets, then repeat this pattern around until you have 24 double crochets.
  • Slip stitch into the top of the double crochet, chain 1, and do 2 double crochets in the same space.
  • Jump over to the next stitch and do 1 double crochet, then jump over to the next stitch and do 2 double crochets in the same space.
  • Repeat this pattern around until you have 36 double crochets.
  • Slip stitch into the top of the double crochet, chain 1, and do 8 double crochets in the same space.
  • Jump over to the next stitch and do a slip stitch, then chain 1 and fasten off.
  • Weave in your tails.

Head:

Count back 7 stitches from the head and attach your orange yarn.

  • Chain 1, then chain 1 more.
  • Go in the same stitch and do 7 double crochets, with a picot on the fourth double crochet.
  • Chain 3, then go through the two loops and pick up the one on the left, then go right down underneath it and get that loop.
  • Yarn over and pull through all three loops.
  • Do 3 more double crochets, then slip stitch into the next stitch and slip stitch into the next stitch.
  • Repeat this pattern two more times.
  • Go into the next space, slip stitch, chain 1, and fasten off.
  • Weave in your tails.

Beard:

Change to your 4 mm hook and attach the beard to the right side of the head.

  • Pull up a loop, chain 1, and go right back into the same space and do 2 single crochets, a half double crochet, and 2 more single crochets.
  • Do a slip stitch in the same space, chain 1, and fasten off.
  • Weave in your tails.

Wattle:

Attach the yellow or orange yarn to the right side of the head, above the second double crochet.

  • Chain 2, skip the first loop, and do a single crochet in the second loop.
  • Go right back into the same space and do a slip stitch, chain 1, and fasten off.
  • Weave in your tails.
