Materials Needed:

  • Yarn: Sweet Snuggles Light, Size 6 (Super Bulky). Colors: White and Baby Green.
  • Crochet Hook: 6.0 mm crochet hook.
  • Other Tools: Yarn needle, stitch marker, scissors.
  • Eyes: 10 mm safety eyes (with or without backings) or use fabric glue.
  • Details: Black crochet thread or embroidery floss for the face.
  • Stuffing: Polyester fiberfill.

Making the Turnip Leaves:

Start with a Slip Knot and Chain 11 Stitches:

  • Count 1-11 to create a little braid.

Begin Crochet Pattern:

Starting in the second chain from the hook, perform 4 slip stitches.

  • Half Double Crochet (HDC) twice in the next chain.
  • Move to another chain and slip stitch, then slip stitch in the next chain.
  • In the next chain, execute two half double crochets, and then two double crochets in the following chain.
  • Perform two double crochets again in the last chain.

Work Back Down the Other Side of the Chain:

  • Starting from the end, mirror the pattern you created going up the chain but in reverse, ending with the slip stitches.

Finish the Leaf:

  • Sew the ending thread through the leaf to secure, creating one complete leaf.
  • Repeat the steps to create a second identical leaf.

Making the Turnip Body:

Starting the Bottom:

  • Make a Slip Knot and chain two.
  • Six Single Crochets (SC) in the second chain from the hook.

First Increase Round:

  • Increase in every stitch around (12 stitches total).

Second Increase Round:

  • SC in one stitch, then increase in the next, repeat around (18 stitches total).

Third Increase Round:

  • SC in next two stitches, then increase, repeat around (24 stitches total).

Three Rounds of Single Crochets:

  • Single crochet in each stitch around for three complete rounds without increasing (24 stitches each round).

Start Decreasing:

  • First Decrease Round: SC in the next two, then invisible decrease, repeat around.

Following Round:

  • Single crochet in each stitch around.

Final Decrease Before Face Work:

  • SC in one, then invisible decrease, repeat around.
  • After the decreases, pause to add facial features with embroidery floss before closing the top.

Add Safety Eyes and Embroider Face:

  • Place safety eyes between rounds five and six, four stitches apart.
  • Embroider mouth and eyebrows using black thread.

Sew on Leaves (Ears):

  • Position and sew each leaf to the top of the turnip body, using the yarn tails.

Final Decreases and Closing:

  • Continue decreasing to close the top, stuff fully before fully closing.
  • Close the hole by threading through the front loops of the last six stitches and pulling tight.
  • Weave in the end and hide the tail inside the turnip.

Finishing Touches:

  • Fluff and shape your turnip, adjusting the leaves and facial features as necessary. Your little angry turnip is now complete!
