Measuring and Creating the Base Panel
- Measure across your underarms for desired shrug width.
- Create a chain that matches this measurement.
- In the 3rd chain from the hook, make a Half Double Crochet (HDC).
Repeat: Chain 2, turn, and make HDC across for each row.
- Continue until the panel reaches desired height (typically shoulder to shoulder).
Creating Neck Space and Shoulder Panels
- Measure your neck width and subtract 2 inches.
- Fold the panel in half and mark the midpoint.
- From the midpoint, measure half the adjusted neck width on each side and mark with stitch markers.
For First Shoulder Panel:
- Chain 2, turn, and HDC across to the stitch marker.
- At the end of each row, make a decrease over the last two stitches.
- Repeat until shoulder panel is desired length.
- Chain 1, cut yarn, and fasten off.
Repeat for Second Shoulder Panel on the opposite side.
Joining Panels and Adding Neckline Border (Optional)
- Hold both panels together and slip stitch shoulder seams to join.
- Try on shrug to ensure it fits comfortably.
Optional Neckline Border:
- Attach yarn at neckline edge.
- Chain 2, then HDC around the neckline.
- Join with slip stitch and fasten off.
Creating Sleeves
For Each Sleeve:
- Attach yarn at the corner of the armhole.
- Chain to reach the opposite corner and slip stitch to join.
- Round 1: Chain 2, HDC in each row around the armhole and across the chain.
- Repeat Rounds: Chain 2, turn, and alternate regular HDC rounds with rounds that include a decrease at each end.
- When sleeve reaches desired length, slip stitch to join, chain 1, and cut yarn.
- Repeat for second sleeve.
Adding Extra Length (Optional)
- Attach yarn at any bottom corner.
- Chain 2 and HDC evenly around the bottom edge.
- Continue for as many rounds as needed for desired length.
