Materials Required:

  • Safety eyes (Various sizes and colors)
  • Camping lights (with three color settings, comes with a hook)
  • White yarn (and other colors matching your light bulbs; green in this scenario)
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Black yarn
  • Gemstones or ribbons (for decorating)
  • Crochet hook (size 8)
  • Pair of scissors and a tapestry needle

Instructions:

Starting the Head:

  • Begin with white yarn, making a magic loop.
  • Chain 1, then work 14 half double crochets (hdc) into the magic loop.
  • Tighten the loop slightly and remove the latch from the camping light's hook (preserve it for later reattachment).
  • Slip stitch to connect the end of the round.

Expanding the Head:

  • Chain 1 at the beginning of a new round.
  • Make 2 hdc in each stitch around, resulting in 28 hdc.
  • Complete the round with a slip stitch.

Shaping the Head:

  • Chain 1, then begin a decrease by half double crocheting two stitches together (hdc2tog) followed by a hdc in the next stitch.
  • Continue the pattern of hdc2tog followed by a hdc around, resulting in 18 stitches.
  • Slip stitch to complete the round.

Finishing the Head:

  • Start with an hdc decrease (hdc2tog), followed by 3 hdc in the next stitches.
  • Repeat this pattern around, slip stitch to complete the round.
  • Secure the central open area with a knot to accommodate the camping light's hook. Trim the excess yarn.

Creating the Body (Dress):

  • Switch to green yarn (or your chosen color). Start with a half double crochet in each stitch around for the first row.
  • Work in an increase pattern by doing one hdc in the next two stitches, then two hcdc in the following stitch.
  • Continue this pattern to achieve a flared body shape matching the desired dimensions (e.g., increasing to 22, then 26, and finally 30 stitches through successive rounds).

Adding Details:

  • Fix the safety eyes to the designated rows on the head.
  • Use black yarn to stitch a smiling mouth beneath the eyes.
  • Insert and shape pipe cleaners for antennae.
  • Crochet and attach legs and arms, following the same general method for both: crochet a chain of 9 (including a single crochet to start), half double crochet back along the chain, attaching it to the body with a slip stitch.

Creating and Attaching Wings:

  • Chain 12. Starting from the second chain from the hook, work a single crochet, followed by half double crochets increasing into double crochets towards the end of the chain.
  • At the chain's end, work 3 double crochets, turn your work to the opposite side, and mirror your stitch pattern back to the start.
  • Finish by attaching the wings with a little hot glue or sewing them on as preferred.

Final Touches:

  • Decorate the body with gemstones or ribbons as desired.
  • Insert the camping light into the crochet bug and reattach the light's hook through the loop reserved at the top of the head.
  • Adjust the light setting to your preference to make your glow bug shine.
