Materials
- Yarn: Hobie Horizon self-striping yarn and solid color for ribbing.
- Hook: 4 mm crochet hook.
- Project Goal: Each hexagon side should be 48 cm.
Part 1: Making the Two Hexagons
The hexagon is made in the round using the granny stitch cluster (3 double crochets).
- Foundation: Make a magic ring (or chain 4 and slip stitch to join).
Round 1:
- Chain 3 (counts as first dc) and make 2 double crochets (dc) into the ring.
- Chain 2 (this is a corner space).
- Repeat "3 dc, chain 2" five more times to form 6 clusters.
- Chain 2 and slip stitch to the top of the chain-3 to close the round.
Round 2 & Up:
- Start: Sl st into the first chain-2 space. Chain 3 and place 2 dc into the same space.
- Corner: In the next chain-2 space, make a corner: (3 dc, chain 2, 3 dc).
- Repeat: Continue making corners in each of the six chain-2 spaces.
- End: Place 3 more dc in the starting chain-2 space. Chain 2 and sl st to close.
- Continue around the hexagon, repeating this pattern until the desired size is reached.
Part 2: Joining the Cardigan Base
Back Seam:
- Work a row of granny stitch down one side of the first hexagon.
- Attach the second hexagon with granny stitch clusters, joining the pieces with sl st in the spaces between stitch clusters.
Sleeve Seams:
- Work across the sleeve in granny stitch.
- Fold the piece in half and continue making granny stitch clusters while joining with sl st.
Sleeves and Cuffs (Fitted Cuff Method)
- Sleeve Extension: Work in granny stitch to extend the sleeve length.
- Cinch: Use two rows of single crochet (sc) decreases to reduce sleeve circumference.
Cuff Ribbing:
- Chain the desired length for the cuff and work half double crochet (hdc) in the back loop.
- Attach the ribbing to the sleeve edge with sl st.
Bottom Ribbing and Wrap Straps
- Bottom Ribbing: Attach ribbing yarn and work hdc in the back loop.
- Strap Hole (Optional): Create a hole by making 2 hdc, chain 4, skip 4 stitches, and then continue with hdc.
Neck Band and Straps:
- Make a long chain for the strap and work hdc back down the chain.
- Attach the strap to the neck band with sl st.
(Optional) Star Embellishment Pattern for Straps
- Make a magic ring and place 10 double crochets (dc) into the ring.
- Chain 4, skip the first chain, and work sc, hdc, dc in each chain.
- Attach the points with sl st to complete the star.
