Crochet Suzette Stitch Cardigan Pattern For All Season

This Suzette Stitch Cardigan pattern creates a beautifully textured and comfortable layering piece designed for a 40 inch chest. The Suzette Stitch, made by combining single crochet and double crochet in the same stitch, produces a soft, dense, and visually appealing fabric.

The pattern is simple to follow, easy to customize in length, and ideal for both beginners and experienced makers. Whether you want a cozy cardigan for daily wear or a classic handmade wardrobe essential, this design offers a timeless and versatile finish.

Materials

  • 600g Fingering or Sport weight yarn
  • 4.5 mm hook for the main body
  • 4 mm hook for ribbing
  • Finished chest 40 inches, body length 24 inches, sleeve length 18 inches
  • Start with chain 145 using an odd number if adjusting the size

Initial Setup

  • Make a loose foundation chain of 145 to begin the cardigan width.

Row 1 Suzette Stitch

  • Skip the first chain.
  • Work one single crochet and one double crochet in the second chain.
  • Skip the next chain.
  • Work one single crochet and one double crochet in the next chain.
  • Repeat this sequence across the row.
  • End with one single crochet in the final chain.

Repeating Rows for Body

  • Chain 1 and turn.
  • Work one single crochet and one double crochet into the single crochet of each cluster.
  • Skip each double crochet.
  • Continue this pattern to the end of the row.
  • Finish with one single crochet in the last single crochet.
  • Repeat until the body measures 15.5 inches or approximately 50 rows.

Armhole Division

  • Divide 72 clusters into 18 clusters for each front panel and 36 clusters for the back panel.
  • Mark the single crochet of the 18th cluster on both sides.

Back Panel

  • Join yarn at the marked single crochet.
  • Work the Suzette stitch across 36 clusters.
  • Continue for 48 rows or until the armhole height reaches 8.5 inches.

First Front Panel

  • Work 2 rows straight with no decreases.
  • Begin decreases at the neck edge every second row.
  • For decrease rows skip the first cluster and start in the next single crochet.
  • Alternate one decrease row and one straight row.
  • Continue until the panel matches the 48 rows of the back panel.

Second Front Panel

  • Work 2 rows straight.
  • Begin neck shaping by decreasing at the end of every second row.
  • For decrease rows work the final cluster into the second to last single crochet and slip stitch into the last.
  • Alternate straight and decrease rows.
  • Continue until it matches the back panel height.

Shoulder Seaming

  • Place the panels with wrong sides facing each other.
  • Slip stitch 15 stitches together on each shoulder through both layers.

Sleeve Setup

  • Join yarn at the underarm space.
  • Work one cluster in every alternate row end around the armhole.
  • Join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet.

For Sleeve Body

  • Work the Suzette stitch in the round.
  • Join and turn at the end of each round.
  • Continue for 46 rounds or until the sleeve measures 18 inches.

Sleeve Cuff

  • Work 2 rounds of single crochet.
  • Switch to a 4 mm hook.
  • Chain 8 and work 7 single crochets back.
  • Slip stitch into the next 2 stitches along the cuff edge.
  • Turn and work back loop only single crochet across.
  • Repeat this process around the entire cuff.
  • Slip stitch the ribbing ends together to close.

Bottom Border

  • With a 4.5 mm hook single crochet across the bottom edge.
  • Switch to a 4 mm hook.
  • Chain 9 to begin ribbing.
  • Work back loop only single crochet and join with slip stitches along the bottom edge.
  • Continue until the entire bottom border is complete.

Front and Neck Border

  • Using a 4.5 mm hook single crochet around the cardigan opening.
  • Work about 5 single crochets for every 4 row ends.
  • At the back neck work 3 single crochets then 2 single crochets together to shape.
  • Chain 8 to begin ribbing height.
  • Work back loop only single crochet and join with slip stitches along the edge.
  • Add buttonholes every 13 rows by chaining 3 and skipping 3 stitches.
  • Continue ribbing until the full opening is finished.
