Materials Needed:
- Yarn
- Crochet hook
- Yarn needle (for weaving in ends)
Pattern Steps
Creating Slip Knot and Chain Ring:
Start with a Slip Knot:
- Hold the tail end of the yarn in your right hand and the long strand in your left. Cross them over to form a loop, insert fingers through the backside of the loop, grab the long strand, pull through slightly, and tighten to form a slip knot.
Chain 4:
- Yarn over (Yo) and pull through the loop on the hook four times to create a chain of 4.
Form a Ring:
- Perform a slip stitch into the first chain to form a small ring.
Round 1:
Chain 6:
- This counts as your first double crochet (dc) and chain 3 space.
3 Double Crochets:
- Yarn over, insert hook into the ring, yarn over, pull up a loop. Yarn over, pull through two loops on hook, yarn over, and pull through the remaining two loops. Repeat this twice more to have a total of 3 double crochets.
Chain 3:
- Repeat the double crochet step three more times into the ring.
Repeat Step 2 and 3:
- Continue around the ring, each time following with a chain 3 until you have four sets of 3 double crochets separated by chain 3 spaces.
Close the Round:
- Slip stitch to the 3rd chain of the initial 6 chains.
Round 2:
Chain 6:
- Again, this counts as your first dc and chain 3 space.
Working the Corners:
- In each chain 3 space from the previous round, work 2 clusters of 3 dc’s, separated by a chain 3.
Chain 1:
- Between each corner cluster set.
Close the Round:
- Like the first round, slip stitch to the 3rd chain of the starting chain 6.
In Round 3 and Beyond:
- Start each new round by slip stitching into the first chain space, then chain 6.
Corners:
- Work two clusters of 3 dc’s in each corner space, separated by chain 3.
Sides:
- Work one cluster of 3 dc’s in each space along the sides between the corners, chain 1 between clusters.
- Repeat the pattern, increasing the number of side clusters with each round to maintain the square shape.
Finishing:
- After completing your final round, slip stitch into the 3rd chain to join and finish the round.
- Cut your yarn, leaving a small tail. Pull it through the loop on your hook and tighten.
- Weave in all ends with a yarn needle for a neat finish.
